Some of my colleagues have been using the wRITE A MESSAGE IN CAPS AND THEN DON'T RECTIFY IT thing lately - is this the latest thing after swine flu?

I was going to say Dissensus is where I come to be thick but I seem to be proving the point. My capitalized text reverts to lower case when I Submit Reply, so I guess I don't know how.

I can see 'z' replacing 's' as the preferred suffix for plurals in English within a few decades.

Pluralz. Decadez.

I was looking through some old English and history coursework on the hard drive I used during sixth form, and I was way smarter at 17/18 than I am now. This job has rotted my brain, my maths is a teensy bit better but my English has completely gone down the toilet.

I'm also not that great at skateboarding. Or empathy, if by this one means understanding why the most upset person in the room gets to be right. But I can do two-handed tapping on an electric guitar! Although, to be honest, that was more something to be excited about when I was 16.

vimothy

One-handed tapping would be more impressive.

always thought this was so unfair. and pissed me off that the adults wouldn't see the senselessness of it: just because the other kid starts crying you have to apologize to them? what!?!?!

Ha. TBH, and I'm not sure why you can't tell it's been edited, my capitalised text did the same thing, so I had to go back and insert one lower caps letter.

tENTATIVE TEST...

Ah thanks Vimothy. So it's some sort of anti-shouting device that most people on Dissensus are clever enough to work round, apart from a few who need to be shown. Not my strong point though. I'm more of a lager guy.

I got kicked out 2 of my 3 classes at A-Levels and managed an N in Economics.

I am one of the dumb ones that trawl this site because I love cheap shit food and chavy 2 step garage.

I have been known to watch a subbed film, only because it fills my reading and tv quota in one time.

I miss Nomad. Also Josef K, Swears and a few other people.
I'm not particularly clever, but I'm sure I used to be a little less dumb than I am now - which is kind of worrying.

Thanks for reminding me of that, possibly my favorite Dissensus moment ever. Hadnít thought of it in ages. Pretty sure it was a Remarc tune she was going to transcribe tho. One of his crazy Amen rinseouts. I miss Nomad.

Nomad was funny, she was clearly smart in certain specialised ways but she was terrible at telling when someone was joking or not being entirely serious. Also I've never seen anyone put as much effort into appearing nonchalant or not bothered by something as she used to.

K-Punk was pretty clever. But he mainly seemed to use his intelligence to try to objectively demonstrate that anyone with different taste in music from him was an inherently worse person for it.

I think meself and Tea have probably got the most letters after our names, but that probably tells you more about the difference between specialized knowledge and general intelligence than it does about how clever we are.

luka
18-01-2012, 11:42 AM
i wouldnt say that. i dont think tea can compete with me on my territory but he makes a much better fist of it than if i tried to compete with him on his territory.

i dont know you or where your talents lie but im sure the same would apply where youre concerned. im very good at what im good at and helpless otherwise. my guess is the same is true of most people here.

You got a PhD, Slothrop? There must be a few people here who have. I screwed mine up, well got fed up with it anyway, took an MPhil in the end (which, I suppose, does have more letters...).

Luka's pretty much the official Dissensus poet laureate. I enjoy writing silly bits of purple-prose fiction but I wouldn't have a clue where to start with poetry. I'm vaguely getting into David Jones via my girlfriend though, and it was cool to find that luka's into him too.

Yeah yeah, I saw that, it was cool. I'd thought you'd C/P'd the whole thing, poem plus notes, from somewhere, so props on all the definitions. I guess I can start with the biggies, Ana and IP, as soon as she's had her viva (which is tomorrow) and done whatever corrections she needs to do. So far all I've done is read small snippets here and there to check the refs in her thesis, so I haven't read any of his stuff properly yet, though I think I've got a feel for his style from these bits and pieces.
