There seems to be only one existing thread in the music section on Dissensus with the words 'acid house' in the title started by Woebot going on about Mancunians that lasted about 12 posts so thought i'd start a new one for anything interesting acid house related.

Ach!

A friend of mine played this song to me in the summer. I couldn't believe I'd never heard of it before:

<object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5TXmVITLm1A&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5TXmVITLm1A&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object>

Ach!

This... well this has to be one of my favourite acid tracks ever. I think this is tagged incorrectly, should be "House Mix". It was actually the other mix, the "Space mix" that I knew from way back (http://www.discogs.com/Various-House-Hallucinates-Pump-Up-London-Volume-One/release/525226), as I only heard this version this year. This one is way, way more strung out - I get an E-like rush as soon the claps go into overdrive.

What level of 'phased' do you think would be more appropriate Zhao? It's a cool album, but it doesn't really rewrite history does it?

Naaah, plainly smart alecky facetiousness tbh.

If anything the 'Ragas to a Disco Beat' add some weight to an argument for technological determinism - if someone with some disco records and the same Roland machines and no other connection (afaik) to the Chicago house continuum actually ends up producing something quite similar sounding, then it seems like the technology really is a key input to the sound. Although I've not listened to Ragas to a Disco Beat, so I'm not sure how deep the similarity really is.

Chicago acid and detroit techno are two distinct (but intertwined) strands anyway.

I thought acid house was an entirely natural and linear development from the afro-american gospel tradition and to suggest otherwise was racist?

it's main cultural lineage is still as i had put forth: Charanjit Singh was obviously massively influenced by African American music -- hence the words "disco beat" in the title of the album.

but the particular use of the 303 in this way seem to have been pioneered in India. and this fact in no way contradicts anything i have said.

yeah but cti's "dancing ghosts" is way better than that raga bhairav album

not to rain on your dick measuring parade or anything. acid is a *feeling* dude

skull kid
17-05-2010, 07:21 PM
anyway, doesn't make it acid just by virtue of a 303. acid is all about working the cutoff and resonance pots in realtime so it sounds like the box is having an epileptic fit - not much of that on the raga bhairav album. sounds to me like dude was using it just as was intended - as a bass synth

I was amazed when I heard it, but its not really proto-acid as hes sort of using as it was designed ( as a basic bass accompaniment with an 808 and not tweaking it or anything) I doubt phuture or any of the other to be acid house producers heard it at the time either. Still a mental record though.

it's even got the acid funk vibe to it since he's trying to bend towards the microtones, which the 303 can't do but it makes it sound like funk in the trying. this is as explicitly acid as you can get, could pass this off for current luke vibert albums even. it does go beyond that too, he does a lot of cool shit on a jupiter 8 playing what are basically bansoor lines and using it that way, in a degree of complexity you don't find in acid..

Im surprised theres no Relief Records on here yet.

This is one of my favorite acid tracks and one of my favorite records:

http://www.discogs.com/DJ-Sneak--Armand-Van-Helden-Hardsteppin-Disko-Selection/release/1876

DJ Sneak & Armand Van Helden - Hardsteppin Disko Selection from '96.

I like the acid from the mid 90s best, when there was a good amount of jack involved.

A friend of mine is making and releasing honest-to-god hardware-driven acid house. In fact, he's started a DIY label. The records are on the pricey side, but if you like what you hear then I would encourage you to buy. I, for one, would like to see him succeed.

This 'video is private' not the best way to publicise your work......

The trouble with this guys tunes are that the acid lines are really repetitive and not very funky, it doesn't sound like he's playing the box at all, just letting it run one pattern...

If anyone is interested in seeing the moment when the old jazz/funk/soul underground dance scene was suddenly brushed aside search for Prestatyn1989 on YouTube. Actually as is explained the footage is from a 1988 at the Showstoppers soul/dance weekender (the continuation of Caister). This video is a real historical document and shows vast hordes of smiley- faced teeshirt wearing ravers taking over the main room and the pissed off soul and hiphop fans and the old style djs like Chris Hill skulking round the smaller rooms and the communal areas.

Its amazing just how swift his change in the scene was and many of the ravers shown would have bought their tickets for the weekender straight after the early April 1988 weekender when a mass Acid house culture didnt exist, the main room was still the funk room and they would have still been funkateers.

This is one of the best things I've seen on Youtube as I said veritable historical document of a period that changed British club culture for ever.PS It may even be footage of the very first mass acid rave as up till this point in 1988 it'd all been really about clubs and warehouse parties (the larger scale Acid parties were just about to start to happen) and in the big room at a weekender you'd have thousands and there were big big numbers in the "Reactor" that weekend.

stumbled across this mix recently of mainly chicago stuff and have been rinsing it ever since:

Placid - A Different Space (http://www.popyourfunk.com/2009/08/just-good-music-81309-a-different-space/)

1. Liz Torres - What You Make Me Feel (Jack Trax)
2. Dream 2 Science - Breathe Deep (Power Move)
3. Ace & The Sandman - Let Your Body Talk (Saber)
4. FK - Hypnodelic (Wave)
5. Master C & J - Face It (State Street)
6. Chicago Skyway - Heavens (M>O>S Recordings)
7. Virgo Four - In A Vision (Trax)
8. Anton Zap - Mon 16:46 (Uzuri)
9. Tevo Howard - 60660 (Beautiful Granville Records)
10. Farley Jackmaster Funk - Farley Knows House (Trax)
11. Black Ice - A Different Space (Velvet City)

great example of how good acid can be:cool:
