dumb questions

I'm working on some Word files sent to me from Germany. It's all in English, but because the file is German it's impossible to spellcheck and does all manner of weird stuff (upside down quotation marks for one). How do I put it into something more manageable?

quotation marks - just do a find and replace?

spell check - have a look at the default language settings for the document and change it to English?

or if all else fails just cut and paste the text into a new document?

doing that, but takes time (you have to copy from another doc, cos it automatically does them wrong)

won't do the spell check - first time i tried it came up with something about it being in german. now i try it tells me it's complete, even if type asopmbsjhfbdfasjkbs and try again.

or if all else fails just cut and paste the text into a new document?

this works if i copy in stuff from a regular doc first, then stick the copied german file underneath. weird.
