RIP Rowland S Howard

Whilst he aint dub-step-hyperism defintely a 'modernist' guitar player, and one of the
more unique and 'world class' influential artists from Australia.

Most of you probably know his sound/style - noise guitar fused with a cinematic Morricone-like grandeur informed by the post-punk neurosis - you only have to hear this decades more 'groovy' hipster bands like Yeah, yeah, yeahs and Crocodiles, amongst others to get the reach.

He gave Nick Cave an edge and a style, Rowland was one of the original Aussie 'hipsters' and definitely set the wheels in motion of a sonic counter-invasion that in a way contributed to the reconfiguration English post-punk into the bliss-out of the late 80s (Mary Chain, MBV, Creation sound).

RIP

So guitar strangling and influential in his way and in his time ...
RIP Rowland :(:(:

Grievous Angel

Beast of Burden
His feedback solo on the Birthday Party's cover of the Stooges' Loose, on the Drunk on the Pope's Blood album, is one of the defining moments of post-punk.

Glad you think so, since Simon Reynolds didn't even mention it in his biased history of post-punk - a book i incidentally picked up at Fopp for 3 quid!

Hear you Grevious Angel on "Drunk on the Pope's Blood" - it was a good week for the Pope to get pushed by that woman.

Deep In The Woods ... "Tonight we sleep in separate ditches..."

"Garbage In Honey's sack again ..." from German TV
