So does anyone here care about the iPad?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8483654.stm

On the whole, my response would normally be "meh". However, I've long wanted one of those crazy Jazz Mutant touch-screen MIDI controllers. Those things cost between four and five thousand dollars, I think. The iPad is going to be $400-$800 and it's only a matter of time (probably not much time) before someone writes an app that turns it into a fully programmable MIDI controller.

It looks like a pile of shit. Total missed opportunity.

Maybe it'll be good when its hacked and someone puts a decent OS on it.

I'm totally mystified as to why people get excited abotu stuff like this in general.

Yeah, as a cost-effective customisable multi-touch controller it could be really good.

I really like the idea of running something like Numerology on it. That would be fantastic I reckon.

I was talking to someone who's been following this and the consensus of opinion seems to be that the Jazz Mutant Lemur will be history before the year is out. $400 versus $4000? Bit of a no-brainer.

Might not take 'til the end of the year if this iPhone app works on it!

Sweeet! This looks like a dream come true for me but it will depend on how much customization it lets you do to the interface. I'd need it to be 100% configurable. Does anyone have experience of using this on the iPhone?

Looking quite promising for music things already this isn't it.

Korg Electribe

I guess mostly as an affordable, configurable controller there's lots of potential there and lots of developers working on it.

The Korg thing looks cool. I actually have an Electribe ES1 sampler and it's ace.

Mainly, though, it's stuff like TouchOsc and Midipad that will make me buy an iPad - not so much for the wireless aspect but for the configurability.

"Apple and other clients have said they are investigating working conditions at Foxconn, which has some 420,000 employees at its base in Shenzhen and has come under fire for its secretive corporate culture"

420,000 people working in one place! The scale of stuff in China is just mind boggling...

So does anyone have any experience using TouchOSC or any other controller app on the iPad yet? Is it worth buying an iPad just for use as a MIDI/OSC controller - aside from the obvious moral implications of supporting market-Stalinism in China?

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/11/10/synth-fans-rejoice-rebirth-for-ipad-now-available/

15$ seems like a steal (the price of the iPad itself does not yet though)
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.tuaw.com/media/2010/11/rebirthipadw00t.jpg

ReBirth was an application initially created for Mac back in late 1996, and emulated two Roland TB-303 synthesizers, a Roland TR-808 drum machine, and a Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer simultaneously.

yeah the internet separated into apps is probably just going to be overall bad... with the whole idea being the content of the screen/app coming to you, you no longer have to fetch it out. And murdoch is right, people are willing to pay to use the network of the internet if they dont ever actually have to browse it. All that stumbling through websites that are deemed irrelevant within milliseconds of arriving is annoying to most people.

still though all those synthesizer apps and mixing apps look awesome...

Apple discovered underage workers, "involuntary labor," worker endangerment, and bribery at some of its supplier facilities over the course of 2010, the company revealed in its 2011 Supplier Responsibility Progress Report. (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/02/apples-2011-supplier-report-underage-workers-bribery-and-severed-business.ars)

wierdly, apple report on their own child and slave labour;

I picture them going public with this new "discovery" in an advertising campaign shot against a white background where young overzealous men in collared shirts and pullovers froth at the mouth over how child-labour is going to revolutionize the way we view the workforce. Children are, after all, the smaller, thinner worker.
