anyone here care about the closure of 6 music or asian network? i think if theyre getting rid of those two, they should get rid of 1xtra too. then downsize the staff of radio 1 and 2. everyone knows theyre unnecessarily bloated. then just get rid of half the people on radio 2 and fill it up with people from resonance.

6music is wank. 1xtra is pointless and has a horrible "bbc correctness gone mad" sheen, but i still prefer it to 6music.

every 1xtra presenter apart from westwood seems to have been put through some weird sort of personality neutering bbc presenter machine.

...i'll be sad to see 6music go... it's the only radio I listen to (No, I can't be arsed to listen online to fucking Resonance etc )... it reminds me of indie disco circa 1990 (in a good and bad way) and has the kind of bumbling, semi-literate, middle-brow, enthusiasm / love that's missing from my life ever since i was a small lad with lots of time on my hands and had to hang around with other guys discussing whether or not the latest Foetus 12" was any good (it was, up til that one about Butterflies...)

love the Freak Zone... even the Jazz bits... though it's still not as fun as Radio 3s Mixing It...

6Music is saved (announced this morning on Laverne's show).

I barely listen to it in the daytime (or even that much in the week). But Sundays are essential. So I'm dead happy.

radio 6 is a fucking waste of time. i'd be happy if their core music just didn't exist.

oh, or the 1 show, that is dreadful.

the one show is equivalent to giving up on television. it's like a more expensive version of the test card. although it presumably hasn't had that much more money spent on it, so perhaps it's irrelevant.

i think 1xtra is often all right to listen to even if you think it's a bit cringey

i presume by "core music" you mean the kind of indie / alt stuff they play in the week / daytime. Fair enough, but most daytime radio anywhere is the weakest part of its output. 6Music comes into its own in the evening and at weekends (Sundays especially - Stuart Maconie's Freakzone is pretty fucking unique for example).

It seems like the BBC (or the people who set their goals) really need to think about what success means in the context of public service broadcasting. There's always been a bit of a drive to get ratings, but is there any real value to the public in having them spending most of the day trying to get ratings off the commerial broadcasters by doing essentially the same thing as them ie personality driven nonspecialist music and chat? And this is what leads to them paying super-inflated salaries for the 'personality' presenters and getting stick for pissing away license payers' money.

I mean, the interesting bits of 6 Music or 1 Xtra seem like they should be as cheap as chips to produce - how much does it cost to get someone with an interesting record collection to play some tunes and talk a bit about them? Resonance seem to manage...

Radio 4 has a similar machine that makes everyone, whether presenter or guests, come out sounding upper class, even the northerners. Thats the only excuse I can think of, there can hardly be that many toffs alive.

1xtra either needs a complete re-think or should be binned. Since they gradually got rid of all the decent specialist shows over the years (excalibah, rodney p & skitz, ritchie vibe vee etc)
