Hypnagogic pop

So, anyone else into this? I don't know much about it apart from stuff that I've picked up from The Wire (not the TV programme) and Boomkat, but I do know that it's good music to have a nice smoke to on a summer evening

This seems to be a good introduction - http://boomkat.com/downloads/312549-various-14-tracks-14-tracks-hypnagogic-heat-haze

This is a quality album, only given it a couple of listens but it's like a self-contained wee world - http://boomkat.com/cds/258110-toro-y-moi-causers-of-this

Tips for further research would be appreciated :)

I really like most of that record, but the best tracks on it were all available for free (+ legal) download before it came out.

I don't read the Wire or shop at Boomkat, but American things like Pitchfork / Fader / XLR8R call the sound "chillwave". Other acts that I've heard lumped in there are Washed Out, Neon Indian, Best Coast, Memory Tapes (I think), Crystal... Sift through the MP3s on XLR8R.com or Pitchfork.com and you should come up with a whole lot of free stuff.

95% shit - as always a few cool ideas and general vibes can't make up for bad songs - so I'm pretty happy to stick with Toro Y Moi in general.

Actually, if Ruby Suns fits I do like their latest album.

i generally think of toro y moi and all the other stuff mentioned as more on the chillwave/glo-fi side of things (horrible names), and see hypnagogic pop as the more noisey stuff, especially James Ferraro and all that. kinda like laptop vs 4-track.

this is for me some of the best stuff

Thanks for the tips. I've not been on Pitchfork for ages cos I'm an electronic music geek who doesn't have much time for indie bands and suchlike

Yeah, I like verrrry little rock stuff, but I subscribed to Pitchfork's free MP3 feed ("Forkcast", ho ho) about a year ago and even if I only like 1 in 10 things on there (and really love maybe 1 in 50) that's enough for me.

Nice, that comps sounding good (despite boomkats annoying bleeps that seem to be in direct contrast with the "hypnogogic" elements  ). The genrification does seem like another one of those labels created by a music journo trying to create a scene out of something that really isn't.. more like lots of non-geograhically linked (apart from USA?) people that happen to have similar ideas/ ethos. Much like "wonky" except "hypnogogic pop" is probably one of the best genre names i've heard, wonky is definitely near the bottom.

Be interesting to see if the name itself and its premise would effect the music from people who (if it stuck) would actually say they make "hypnogogic pop", (bit like dubsteps possible effect on some earylier productions). I guess some of Paul Whites music could fit into this, except for maybe the sampling aspect.

I wouldn't have associated this release with 'Chillwave' until FACTmag did,

http://www.factmag.com/2010/06/25/oriol-night-and-day/

but it does share some of the shimmery nostalgic feel.

Don't know whether to fall asleep or explode. Apologies if this has been covered in OPN discussions elsewhere.

Matrix Metals' 'Flamingo Breeze' and Rangers' Suburban Tours are also great.

My thought process around this album and chillwave is needlessly complicated, but I didn't mean to necessarily 'associate' Oriol with chillwave... His music is obviously separated from most of that stuff, and he's been making his music way longer than chillwave has ever existed (some of the album tracks are five years old?). It's just that, especially from a North American perspective, it's hard not to associate this slightly nostalgic, pseudo-tropical music with all that other stuff that is admittedly quite similar. It's more a matter of timing than anything else. I would be remiss not to mention the legions of chillwave/hypnagogic artists who mine similar sounds, and I think it would be even more ignorant to just pretend that it didn't exist or didn't sound at all similar. So while I don't think Oriol is at all directly connected with the chillwave/whatever movement, it's hard to deny aesthetic similarities, however coincidental.

p.s. hi dissensus

yeah, a lot of chillwave has this Daft Punk factor, lots of filtererd funk house samples, and a lot brighter production (oriol and Toro Y Moi included), and isnt so much "hypnagogic" in the sense that it doesnt really induce trance, more a sort of hyper-lucid slick funk, very 80's but less of the "memory of the 80s" that most hypnagoigic acts tend to go for, focussing on the the onfuscations and distortions of memory.

some chillwave almost reminds me in part of a lot of the "future garage" coming out, in that theyre both emulating/inspired by really coke-cold brittle funky music, but kinda warmed up in the remake, made lusher and more colourful, the producers re from a different place...

i dont think its just Italo, more that some hypnagogic artists do a "take" on italo and put it through the hypnagogic blender so to speak, where as lots more do it with drivetime rock or coked up funk....

I suppose that pretty much any dreamy type music could be classed as hypnagogic pop

Edit - That doesn't make any sense at all, don't know why I said it. Also going to hunt out some of Sun Araw's earlier stuff

Yeah, it's incredible. Has different names on the Russian Mind EP ('Time Decanted') and Rifts ('Actual Air'), confusingly.

Anyone here seen his Memory Vague DVD? I watched it once a while back, but now it seems to have disappeared from my house.

Either it's been stolen or it existed purely in my imagination
