first hyperdub, then dutty artz, now masala and ghettobassquake and i'm sure i'm forgetting about countless more.

what i want to ask though is how does this differ from how labels started in the past?

i know warp and rough trade were shops. i belive 4ad was also one too. i no that phonica has started one too but that's hardly setting the world on fire.

what i want to also ask if, does this mean with the decline of shops blogs are now the tastemakers that get a following and decide to make a leap into the scary, cutthroat world of the music business.

is this a good thing as it once again shows the internet decentralising the role of the self, expanding on the idea of a virtual community and whatnot...

were there any others ways famous labels came into being?

well not many print mags started labels so it must be something about specialisation in a field - although most labels aren't started by blogs and off blogs only a few, most independent music labels are created by musicians and enthusiasts.

hyperdub was a kinda preblog online magazine and kode9 was also making tracks, dj doing nights, dutty arts were also musicians and djs before they blogged or whatever, so its not quite as cut and dry there as bloggers found label - although there are obv a few like that.

there were loads of soundsystems that started labels - studio one might be what you're thinking of coming off sir coxone downbeat which was a sound.

also places like boomkat also do p and d for a bunch of labels or guys that work there have labels thru boomkat who also distribute, they're tastemakers online i guess.
distributors also act as 'tastemakers' too when they sign labels up for p and d deals, also magazines and online mags act as tastemakers, very few blogs are real tastemakers most are just kinda cool hunting and repost etccc..

if you had a blog and set yourself up as a musical expert, its an easy way to do a and r and define your tastes innit - i guess putting some music out is the next stop.

not quite, but i think one of the guys from 20 Jazz Funk Greats has started a label called Tri Angle, dealing with a lot of this drag stuff that the blog covers.
