by way of explanation:

for a brief shining moment (like mid-'93 through late '94? I dunno exactly) when the darkside/happy split was happening but not yet done it seems like a few producers, mostly on the happy side of the divide, were making tunes that magically combined ruffneck chopped breaks and junglist bass pressure with ridiculous hands in the hair piano riffs and helium-ed eurodance vox samples. it's pretty much the greatest thing ever. I would like to hear more of it. unfortunately until recently I had a kind snobbish disdain for all things happy hc, so I'm relatively unfamiliar. and even still happy hc gets way too "happy hc" - once they lose the breaks & resort to hyperspeed 4/4 pretty much - and there's so much just awful stuff to wade through. so I'm outsourcing it to Dissensus, where more than a few punters must have at least a passing familiarity, and a few of you probably witnessed it in person. so Dissensus happy hc massive, this is your chance to shine! plus isn't happy hc about do for one of those critical reappraisals where people decide it has all this artistic merit that elitist critics dismissed at the time etc...

basically I'm looking for tunes where you think it's a '94 rinseout and then all of a sudden a crazy pitched-up piano riff drops in out of nowhere and you're like WTF? the more over-the-top the pianos & vox, and the ruffer the breaks, the better.

this is -almost- too much, meaning it's totally awesome. that's what we're all about, exploring the the magical point where awesomeness becomes horribleness.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x4iTV63dM0s?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x4iTV63dM0s?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I love this stuff.

plus isn't happy hc about do for one of those critical reappraisals where people decide it has all this artistic merit that elitist critics dismissed at the time etc...
Dunno if this has yet happened to early happy hc - I think original hardcore has done it. But when it will happen, I will go     It's so much safer to dig certain styles when they're past.

Though there was a single juicy backlash to elitists in 90's (exract from Simon Reynolds' article (http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/2030/?pageno=1)):

Caught between its reluctance to abandon the dancefloor totally for no-rules headfuck, and its squeamish disdain for the full-on fervour of the rave, this semi-experimental genre of ‘abstract dance’ suffered a humiliation of sorts earlier this year, when Colin Faver’s long-running Techno show on Kiss FM was dropped to make way for a Happy Hardcore programme. In that hideous, hilarious irony (‘proper’ techno displaced by the rave fodder it had always sneered at) lies a warning for the neurofunk tendency, and for its patron Grooverider, who has his own Kiss FM show based around a similar progressive ethos to Faver’s.
Sounds just so lovely :D :D

This is almost exactly the opposite way round from what you're asking for- ie it starts with an uplifting piano then goes a bit ruffer - and it's about 4 years later. I remember reading a feature in Mixmag or Muzik, some sort of "Wot's the BIG CHOON in your box?" with Force and/ or Styles and he said he loved this one but mixed it out before the drop. Good work.

From the guy who made the darkest of darkcore:

For reference:

Nookie's 'Sound of Music' album has lots of piano jungle, as far as I remember.

I like to pretend I live in alternate universe wherein instead of jungle descending into the drudgery of dnb and happy hc abandoning the breakbeat and becoming terrifyingly infantile, the two of them reconciled and got back together after 1994. tho I suppose that would've obviated the need for 2-step and all that.

also, I would like to make a request/challenge to benny b, gremino, etc - all you dudes who throw down great 2-step and dark garage and old school hardcore mixes on the regular - to put together mixes of these tunes. there is nothing I would like better than to be able listen to crazy piano riffs over ruff amens while I ride up and down the many, many hills of Atlanta on my bike.

an early favorite that I almost forgot, contemporary to Red Alert & Slammer & the glory days of Nookie, oddly enough (or perhaps not) both of these dudes went on to make the most bludclart ruffneck ragga jungle (one as Terry Tee, the other as some other dude from the Kemet Crew), but for now just bask in the glory of sped-up '92 drumz and that ridiculous piano ripped straight from Praga Khan...

One thing I like alot of this era stuff is the use of timestreched breaks as melodies, which jungle abandoned in '94. One of my favourite things in jungle/hardcore. Alot of these tunes in Benny's mix.

a few of the best tunes on Homegrown Records

this is another one of those ones where it's like, ok, pure darkside, then a random happy piano out of nowhere, then straight back to darkside.

probably some people are already familiar with the Naughty Naughty records ca.'93-94, done by Grant Nelson aka Wishdokta from upthread (also aka like 70 other things, he wound up later becoming one of the original dons of 4x4 garage when it was just starting out), they're analogous to Slipmatt's SMD series or from a bit earlier Dave Charlesworth's Energizer series, so you know what you're gonna get - bootleg mashups or remixes of famous tunes a la "40 Miles" or "Sweet Harmony" or whatever over ruff amens kicked up to ~160 bpm, which often (imo) improves upon the original. a couple of favorites:

what can I say I'm a sucker for "Where Love Lives" and mixing it with True Faith is just perverted piano-sampling madness
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ndaCfjwuSuc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ndaCfjwuSuc?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

oh yes nothing is safe not even deep Detroit techno classics (looking at you LTJ Bukem). also this might be the only ambient(-ish) happy hc tune I've ever heard.
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Pc-Uuc_Sob4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Pc-Uuc_Sob4?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

so wait, you're going to take "Gonna Be Alright", which is already a totally manic happy jungle tune, speed it up and slap a tearout Aretha Franklin acapella over the top? oh, that's cool I guess
<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b2aQKokGkv0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b2aQKokGkv0?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

did you know that master of all things ruff, hard and dark DJ SS had his own Naughty Naughty style series of jungle/happy hc mashups called Crowd Pleasers? well maybe you did, but I certainly didn't. they're actually kinda mediocre imo, but this is the Crowd Pleasers tune I like best, yet another darkside jam that inexplicably gives way to rave stabs and finally a full-on euphoric piano breakdown (about 4 minutes in)

yet another Luna-C alias (he has more than Wolfgang Voight and Pete Namlook combined, I swear)

Did you know Krome & Time, of "This Sound is for the Underground" etc ardkore fame, and later purveyors of a slew of great ragga jungle, hardstep, and so on tunes, also had their own happy jungle side project? No, nor did I. unsurprisingly, given that we're dealing with DJ Krome & Mr. Time, it's all REALLY GOOD. Seriously if you just skimmed all the other stuff I tossed up, really take the time to listen to this one. It might just be in my top 10 jungle tunes ever.

Kinda reminds me a little bit of a left-hand path counterpart of 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse (i.e. Foul Play) - "Drowning in Her", but I dunno that's just me, a real 3 A.M. eternal vibe tho you know...

this is by Exodus and Head Pressure - who just to put things in context were also responsible for the infamous, New Jack City-sampling, darkside rinseout "Glass Pipe Fury" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Y5nL0P7Yc) (on K & T's serious jungle label, Tearin Vinyl). this tune is really, really good tho. speaking of which, it's kind of amazing to me that after listening to literally thousands of jungle and ardkore tunes, and knowing -exactly- what's coming, I still get my own mind blown by tunes on a pretty regular basis. I mean even after wading through tons of awful full-on happy hardcore dross to skim off the cream, that one mythical perfect piano line over that one perfect ruff break or whatever is still like a minute of sheer bliss. I think jungle music may be like the only thing in my life that it's impossible for me to get jaded about. seriously.

alright I'm done for now.

thank you dissensus <3 been looking for stuff like this for the past couple of months now, even bearing through one of the guys at reckless records deliberate obstructionism and coming back with some shit that sounds like oasis trying to make techno.

Satin Storm is an absolute classic, not sure if its already been posted. Had the pleasure of hearing Randall play this in room 1 at Fabric 6.30 in the morning to a half filled but fully gurned dance floor.

You must listen to the What Is Happiness? mix over the top of the flash intro on ambalafoods.com - fortuitous accident leading to much hilarity.

the website is http://sonicrampage.org/blog not .com; otherwise I'm stumped, I've never heard of anyone not being able to load my site. Sometimes it goes down for a little while, but not for very long.

Padraig you would looooove this I reckon

tbh this was more a burning obsession I had for a couple weeks 3 years ago than something I actually listen to

crystl or omni trio I could just bang around the house, this stuff not so much. it just don't make sense out of E'd up dancefloor context

also that mix is a bit 4x4 stompy for my tastes (not a criticism tho)

still glad to skim back over this thread tho cos I discovered the previously unknown to me Happy Tunes aka Jason B

one for auld times sake

speaking of that n'joi tho, someone should do a roots of happy hardcore

anthem, injected with a poison, a sasha hacienda piano anthem, 2xtreme, manix, utah saints - something good, a few more ardkore piano classics i.e. music 4 da people, some ca 1991 dodgy italo/piano house, dj seduction, something grant nelson, etc. no fucking toytown charly-type nonsense tho

great thread.

this stuff and pre-neurofunk techstep i'd like to be revived. perfect contrast.

wow this sure seems like a million years ago. guess happy hardcore never did get that critical reappraisal. probably rightly so.

otoh just listened to Something Good for the first time in i don't know how many years and it's still fucking great. at least 80% of that is Kate Bush but still.

I think this duo are the best exponents of this crossover style, which didn't go far beyond 94 went it went pure banging Happy Hardcore (Loftgroover, Doogle etc)

These guys were all on the flipside of Dreamscape tape packs with Bukem, Randall etc in 93/94, the genetic material was still close but starting to cleave

EXCEPT THAT AH HA!!!

This is a YouTube rip of a tape I got in 1993 from some mad guy in my school that I played to death and still have in a box somewhere. Ellis Dee at a Portsmouth rave, full of this stuff, very druggy and unhinged

I love YouTube. This stopped me listening to The Cure quite quickly when I was at school. Still gives me nostalgic chills.
