Ninja Tune XX

Way of the future
Ninja Tune are 20 and are releasing a huge boxset to celebrate:

Weekly free downloads too.

Some of the remixes look pretty interesting, but it is expensive.

Used to love the label in my teens, mid 90s, got me into jungle/dnb later on (around the time when everyone else was getting out). First time I ever bought anything through the web was on their ninja shop in 97 I think.

Have released some really good stuff througout the years, some favourites:
Coldcut - Let us Play and the journey by dj's mix
Amon Tobin - Permutation
Cold crush cuts
the xen cuts / ninja cuts comps.
the earlier DJ Vadim and Roots Manuva bits

I guess a lot of the trip hop hasn't aged to well (and was even beard strokey coffee table stuff at the time), but they´ve done a lot of interesting things in music and technology.

there are no accidents
other than vadim and kid koala and maybe 1 or 2 others, it's a bucket of diarrhea mate.

makes strange noises.
Most of the Amon Tobin stuff still sounds good. The guy's a genius.

It's really a shame he doesn't do more purely dancefloor-oriented stuff.

That's nothing to do with the box set, which I haven't checked out. I'm just sayin.

never really got into ninja tune.
find their stuff either a bit bland coffee tabley or lightweight idm-ish.
i prob missed their 'golden age' though.

Bring out the vacuum
As with any label they do get typecast - stuff like Poirier, The Bug is not exactly cofeetable blando stuff. But yeah, generally pretty horseshit, and I like a lot of soft, mannered downbeat crap. :D
