View Full Version : Terror Danjah

Think he has done enough to deserve his own thread now as I have worked closely with him over 18 months and his debut album is out next month on Hyperdub I just kind of wanted to give him a big shout out for helping me start off the Butterz label and reshaping instrumental Grime music in 2010.

Long term he will always be one of those under saluted guys in electronic music but his release rate, remixes, artist development is only matched by Wiley in the Grime scene in my opinion.

We can use this thread to discuss the album, some of his past productions and some of the forthcoming Hardrive stuff.

Big up Terror Danjah, and Hyperdub for making him do the album

one of my favourite producers though i dont find myself liking his new stuff quite as much as his older releases. and the vocal songs ive heard from the album dont change my mind that hes best as an instrumentals kinda guy (barring a very small handful of songs).

09-10-2010, 12:57 PM
I'll third all of that. For me, one of the most inventive producers around in the last decade (though admittedly, I haven't kept up lately). Rhythmically mad/genius/sadistic in a way only matched by Wookie, with the dropped beats, pauses, reverses, etc. He can make an instrumental so vivid that it never really calls out for vocals.

I like abstracty sounds because I come from drum n bass. I like to do different sounds – I don’t like the same sounds. I don’t like nothing straight. If it sounds like someone else’s I’m not in it. I’ve got to be different, I have to be different. I’ve got to dress different, have my hair different, my girl’s gotta be different. How I brush my teeth gotta be different, even how I sleep is different. I snore loud ladies: it’s a problem. (Blackdown interview (http://www.riddim.ca/?p=230), 2004)Are there clips yet form the album?

I think one of the things Terror definitley doesn't get enough credit for is all the artists he has helped bring through

09-10-2010, 06:27 PM
can someone please recommend some of his earlier stuff for me?

maybe stuff that's more easily accesible/found i.e. not a rare white that only 12 ppl own (if there is such a thing in grime circa 00-02)

09-10-2010, 07:32 PM
There actually isnt that much on youtube

Pure talent, smart, a grafter and obviously got the gift of the gab (like all the best heads in grime.)

Definitely someone who is underrated, when you look at how many artists would be nobodies without Terror as well.

10-10-2010, 08:28 PM
one of my favourite producers from any genre of music, but i have to agree about not liking a lot of the vocals on his tunes - the instrumentals often already have enough elements in them (and are quite dense sounding) so putting a vocal on top of all that seems unnecessary. when listening to vocals of his tunes i almost always pay more attention to the instrumental than whoever is spitting.

i really like some of his RnG tunes though -

There's nothing on youtube for this but on the RnG side of things i always really loved his two tunes on this:

elijah is it true he's doing an R&G EP on harddrive soon?

i hope so. 'so sure' is like an all-time grime top 10 for me.

15-10-2010, 02:56 PM
@Tom yea its true, him and Kode 9 will be on my show next week so drop some questions in here for both of them about the undeniable project and I will get thru em!

While we are here there are 4 of this left - http://butterzrecords.bigcartel.com/product/hdr002-gully-goon-estate-screama-9-available

15-10-2010, 03:17 PM
is that coming out officially or will it only be TPs?

17-10-2010, 09:08 PM
and one of the best producers I've heard regardless of genre - period

I've got this theory...Terror and Wiley are like the Sun and Moon of Grime. you can extend / read into that further if you want

I do have the album but haven't listened to it yet because of lack of time

what do people think of the artwork? looks like a maze...

21-10-2010, 01:48 AM
Terror and Kode 9 are on the show tonight 1-3am so if you have any questions or any lost terror danjah tunes you want me to play then drop them in the thread

21-10-2010, 10:59 AM

Been listening to the Elijah & Skilliam/Kode9/ Terror set today, SO GOOD, new tunes sounding great, nice to hear some more variety from him.
Great on the mic too, proper entertaining :D

Can't wait for the album

29-10-2010, 03:44 PM
Terror Danja.. im gona say the best grime producer of all time

Better than Wiley

31-10-2010, 02:23 PM
Hold on, grime music aint meant to be danceable

This is probably one of the reasons grime never got bigger?

Terror is so much better than Wiley.

31-10-2010, 02:39 PM
doesnt have to be danceable but yeah, his tunes dont have much in the way of groove. theres always something a tad 'awkward' (?) or sophisticated about them. you can hear that hes spent a lot of time finetuning every last bit and where everything should go - hes obv a total perfectionist - but maybe from him doing that the tunes dont have that certain energy (or groove) you get in a lot of grime, even the most undanceable stuff.

31-10-2010, 04:18 PM
his tunes lack groove

This is such a nonsense he makes some of the most danceable Grime, or he did back in the early days anyway (not too keen on the overly 4x4 recent stuff).
He properly kept the swing of Garage

31-10-2010, 05:06 PM
Hold on, grime music aint meant to be danceable

This is probably one of the reasons grime never got bigger?

Terror is so much better than Wiley.

he's really not.

hasn't made anything that can touch eskimo, igloo, ice rink, morgue etc

31-10-2010, 09:37 PM
terror is a genius but apart from maybe cock back, his tunes dont have visceral impact. they dont hit you in the gut how a tune like wheel or morgue does.

01-11-2010, 10:19 AM
so morgue was not a complete rip off of wonders what or did wiley come out with something like wonder stole the idea from him?

Eskimo was a good track, yes i agree, so was igloo and ice rink

but Terror is still using the same sounds pretty much as Wiley was back then and his stuff sounds ill

Wiley is an MC/DJ/Producer in that order

Terror makes beats, horrible horrible beats

How easy is it to go and make a Wiley clone beat? I dont see people copying Terror?

01-11-2010, 10:23 AM
yeah it was a rip off but you can go listen to that avalanche cd of wiley beats and see that although he does those lopsided cbeebies theme tune type beats like igloo, he also does a lot of tracks that are just HARD too. terror doesnt really do that type of track. which doesnt mean theyre not good, but does make him more of a producers producer, or a fave producer for people listening out for complexity rather than something that will get ten reloads in a rave (which is prob why people dont go copying terror, as well as the fact that its prob just harder - but saying that, i love a lot of the old eski rip off beats by other producers anyway)

01-11-2010, 01:11 PM
you've hit the nail on the head there.

that why I probably like him over Wiley because he is a producers producer.

Terrors beats just go sooo deep

01-11-2010, 02:22 PM
I much much prefer Wiley over Terror production-wise personally.

Benny B
01-11-2010, 07:15 PM
They're both great. Lets leave it at that shall we?

01-11-2010, 07:29 PM
they certainly are both great

02-11-2010, 07:06 AM
they should make an album together

02-11-2010, 09:29 AM
Have you heard td dj it's totally danceable.

02-11-2010, 10:25 AM
wiley bass/synth work with Terrors drum programming and fx

02-11-2010, 10:32 AM
yh I saw him at a Night Slugs night (I think?) coupel of years ago and he was good, made me dance:o

I can see the point about his tunes though - some of them arent very 'tracky' but there is a funk there for sure

02-11-2010, 10:53 AM
I love the way that when DJ's used to play his tunes on Grime sets back day, they never used to be able to ride them properly and would always accuse the tune of 'skipping' (titch was a repeat offender) when actually they just couldnt follow the completely f'd beat pattern. So ahead of he's time it's crazy.

02-11-2010, 12:08 PM
In all fairness, there were a LOT of beats that Titch could fuck up. He's actually really sloppy on Radio... Part of his charm though.

20-11-2010, 11:47 PM
the new album is alriiiight. id get rid of the vocal tunes and that one that sounds like terror doing your basic winebar house. was hoping they would release all the instrumentals on one vinyl ep but oh well.

15-12-2010, 11:20 AM
actually, you know what, zipfiles is a 100 times better than the new album. theres only a few tracks on the new one id rate as highly as what hes done before. terror seems to be catering more to the 'serious' crowd on this one which is a shame i think as the stuff on zipfiles - and theres not a bad track on there - has much more energy and spark to it and is still packed with all those kinds of details that production nerds can appreciate.

21-04-2011, 03:25 PM
^Was just listening to it, nice :)

05-05-2011, 01:02 AM

05-05-2011, 02:31 PM
Congrats Elijah. I think when you got Bi-Polar, you got Terror's last great beat in him.

05-05-2011, 02:59 PM
the 'funky' type track he had on the hyperdub album shd get that title i think.

06-05-2011, 03:20 PM
the 'funky' type track he had on the hyperdub album shd get that title i think.

Not really. IMO, he's gotten to into trying to demonstrate himself as a real 'producer', instead of making standout instrumentals. Diverting into funky doesn't quite help him in my eyes.

09-05-2011, 11:04 AM
i do like that track i cant remember the name of more than pretty much anything else on that hyperdub album but by and large, i agree with what youre saying. hes been trying too hard to show how complex and clever he can get when the most memorable beats he did were those before his comeback. bipolar was cool, and im glad hes doing so well but he seems to be too much about technique over content these days.
