American Pictures

there are no accidents
amazing book and collection of photos made by this danish hobo (first "immersive" photo journalist?) who traveled by hitchhiking during the past 4 decades or so, all available online:

http://www.american-pictures.com/roots/roots.htm

it is an immense visual historical document of poverty, racism, and just crazier than fiction shit like the KKK and mass murderers. you really get a deep look into America...

above link is only to the online book, the site is a bitch to navigate, but elsewhere there are thousands of more photos...

and here is the vice interview with him: http://www.viceland.com/int/v17n2/htdocs/jacob-holdt-is-not-a-hippie-330.php

he says that he is not a photographer, and that his talent lies in getting people to trust him, and thus gain access to dimensions of life otherwise hidden. pretty amazing talent and dedication of this random european hippie(ish) vagabond if you ask me.

and i guess the photos used at the end of Von Trier's Dogville are from this book.

i'm on like chapter 12 now. at the bottom of 10 there is a link to the Wounded Knee story. great stuff.

really amazing book, read it back in the day. Think my moms bloke hung out with him as well, was he that showed it to me. Which reminds me i'm gonna have to raid his bookshelf a little more often. And perhaps get a shoot from his peyote cactus.
