Dissensus Raw Productions (http://soundcloud.com/dissensus-raw-productions)

Place for raw, ruff, rude, jagged, edgy and strong vibe productions. Every producer is welcomed, even if you're not registered here!

The idea was from discussion about post-dubstep/future garage/etc. being too bland/polite/safe in rolling back to the future garage/post-dubstep/alt-funkstep/intelli-2step etc thread (http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?10426-rolling-back-to-the-future-garage-post-dubstep-alt-funkstep-intelli-2step-etc-thread/page24), so if you have productions skills and are unhappy with the situation, here's output for your frustration. Or if you are happy with the situation, please still submit your ruff and gritty tracks :D

Empahsis should be on post-dubstep/etc. stuff, but every dance music genre is allowed. This shouldn't be taken too seriously however, so have fun when producing :) Tracks don't necessary have to be more than 3-4min long, so this could be ideal for finishing your unfinished bits. Besides, the idea of 3min track is pretty ruff ;)

Send me your tracks via PM, Soundcloud or emailing dissensusrawproductions at hotmail dot com. Material is shared only with creator's permission.

Alex you've definitely come on alot from that tune you sent me that time, keep at it!

The others are sounding pretty good too. I would actually contribute to this thread if i could ever finish anything off that I started. That age-old amateur producers problem :o

I think you need to force yourself Ben.
Give yourself a week with a limited set of parameters, ie some drums, a few samples and one or 2 synths and just post what you come up with, keep it simple and short.
It's very helpful to get an objective distance on your creations.

I know, I've got a couple of weeks off work starting today so I'll give it a go. Making no promises though!

gremino

Benny, it doesn't have to be more than 3-4min long. even shorter is okay :) this is because this is also place to make tunes for fun, and because some djs (like grime djs) don't really play tunes more than 1-2mins! i can also send you, and everyone else who needs, a little sample pack to get some inspiration. let me know!

i'll probably just try and get one of my old ones done finally. My attention span has been very poor lately so a short track might be best anyway.

Hint's track is very accomplished isn't it? Nice bumpy new jack swing to it.Who's the vocalist?

The vocalist is called Stac. There's a whole album of remixes out today with mine included:

to get Soundcloud player working properly: check 'Additional Options' -> put 'Automatically parse links in text' off. and when you're fixing this problem from your previous posts, remove [ url] [ /url] from Soundcloud links which were automatically added in the first time.

yeah, everybody can post their music in this thread. but if you want your tune in DRP Soundcloud, please contact me.

those are really good - only thing i'd say is you could def let the ideas develop more in a couple of those tunes, simply by more repetition. Feels like there's almost too quick a turnover of ideas - you've got enough material in 3 mins for a 6 min track.

Thank you baboon2004. I see what you are saying and I've been getting the same reaction by other people. I'm not really that good with rhythms and grooves so I always fear that certain sections will get too boring when they are played out longer. Guess that's because I grew up with trance and gabber instead of 2-step and UK garage. Anyway, will keep your and other comments in mind.

Yeah, good stuff yyaldrin, getting better all the time.

Your sound design is really interesting, if I could give some constructive critism, the only thing I like to hear more of is more of a groove.

Is there's a production talk thread on here already..? I'd be interested to know what's your setup is like? Or anyone else's. I'm always up for chatting about square waves and basic mastering techniques, or whatever.

yyaldrin
04-03-2014, 11:19 AM
I think there is a thread like that actually yea, but we might as well have that discussion in here right? For me it's very simple, I just use Ableton.

Your criticism is very on point by the way, I often have the feeling my tracks lack a proper groove or rhythm yea and I got a few theories as of why, (1) I didn't grow up in the UK, no garage or 2-step for me but eurohouse and gabber, (2) I only use software, drawing rhythms and beats on a laptop is very counter-intuitive I think and (3) it's hard to combine a catchy rhythm, something that wants to make you move, with so much sounds, synths and effects, it would require something more subtle as there is less "space".

It makes me wonder though, are there any tricks for getting more groove. I mean, besides putting all of the rhythmical elements (kicks, snares, hi-hats et cetera) on the right places?

Trillhouse
04-03-2014, 12:22 PM
I suspect in some ways it's down to that magic ingredient of having a talent for such things. But I'm sure that shit can be developed and learnt though.

Listening to something like Logos' Lp compared to his previous Ep, you can hear his development in refining his sound and reducing it down to the essentials. Working with space whilst keeping a groove going is a real feat imho and he does it better than most. It's well worth going through the tunes that you really like and deconstructing them in some way, see how they do 'it', then trying to transfer that knowledge to your own work.

I remember reading an interview with Rick Rubin, talking about him and Kanye going through the final production for Yeezus. He said it was all about making it "edgy and minimal and hard", and more about taking out everything vaguely superfluous. I often think about that when I'm working on stuff. If you start with a basic loop with a solid beat, then deconstruct it, dub it out somewhat. If certain elements can't stand up on there own, maybe they're not strong enough. If everything can, then you know you've got something good that you can edit, or build, from. That's kind of how I think about it at the moment. I couldn't sit down and think about it as a whole and write something straight minimal, cause I don't have that skill yet.

The other people I think about when it comes to making minimal music with a serious groove to it are the 90s dancehall producers. Guys like Steelie And Cleavie who were used to devoting hours to tuning instruments and getting drums miked correctly etc, would now spend that time and devote that level of attention to going through the drum samples in their SP1200 or DX and making sure they were constructed & tuned exactly how they wanted them. And that the kit, as a whole, worked together like a real drum kit would. It's that kind of attention to the details that pushes a sound up a level imho. Especially if you're making something quiet minimal, each part needs to be considered and strong.

I may be kinda waffling now.

On a more practical note, what vst do you use to make those nice glassy square wave synths? I've yet to find one I can really work with. I really like the functionality of Operator in Abelton, but the final results can be a little weedy compared to others.

Just been browsing the last couple of pages here. Enjoying the Muscle Beach stuff, some nice summery sounds there. I'd like to hear more of yyaldrin's electronica too, although all the soundcloud links seem to be dead now.

I started making music earlier in the year and would love some feedback. Got a track in two versions I'm quite chuffed with, dunno if it'll be everyone's cup of tea but I guess that's not really the point:

Diggin the videos Yyaldrin. do you make them yourself as well?

yyaldrin

Thank you Trillhouse. I didn't make the video's myself but this "datamosh" effect has been something that interested me for a longr time, it's the perfect visualization of reality and virtuality blending together. The shift from analogue to digital. I like to make music with this effect or image in the back of my head.

I started experimenting with it myself last week. There's a program called Quartz Composer that works pretty good, weird thing is I can't seem to export my video's. Anyway, I plan on doing some more and uploading my own sometime soon. Here's one more by the way:

I like this as well, sounds like you put ten genre's into a five minute track without it sounding chaotic or false, it's subtle instead. Looking forward to hearing more!

Let's Jack is great! Being it the least popular doesn't make it bad! Also, sometimes I feel that your music is really hard to fit to any particular label (consider it a compliment) so maybe Fade to Mind wasn't really the best option but what is?

This is not really my cup of tea (so hard to judge) but I have to say that it sounds very warm, reminds me of Boards of Canada at moments but maybe that's also because of the vintage video's. What instruments did you use?

Yeah, I really enjoyed Let's Jack as well, surprised to read that it wasn't well-received. I remember hearing it on Blackdown & Dusk's show, must've been 2008 or something...

thanks anyway for listening

the boc influence is well-spotted - i just cannot crawl out from under them.

the instruments i use are:

roland juno 6
arturia microbrute and beatstep
korg volcabeats
korg microsampler
guitars, bass

i recently broke my casio sk-1 and a roland sp-202 but those are on the recordings above, maybe

Maybe to have that "vintage" or BoC sound is inherent to the machines you use (?). Anyhow there's nothing wrong with sounding like the music you like IMO.

Uploaded a new bit as well, playing with time signatures and tempo's in order to make something disorienting:
