i'm stating the obvious here but this is what also sucks about the disappearance of record stores: the occasional chat with shop staff or fellow shoppers that leads to new discoveries. ok, it's minus the beer part, but still.

Exactly. When I was getting into underground music I lived in a small town and didn't know anyone I could talk to about this stuff, but I could go on dubstepforum or wherever and talk with like-minded individuals. Having said that, a decent conversation beats internet discussion any day of the week
