Contracts.

MatthewH

makes strange noises.
A collaboration I did with another Montreal producer recently was "signed" to a label. When I was asked to send over the pre-masters I said "let's take care of the paperwork first". The contract we got was appallingly one-sided, we countered with one I had sitting around from ages ago and the deal fell apart in the end because we couldn't find a compromise.

It got me thinking about how little we as dance music types talk about this stuff.

When I worked at BASCA ages ago we had a template songwriter-publisher contract for members. It was itself somewhat one-sided in favour of the writers but it was nonetheless a good place to start.

In comparison, I don't think I've seen anything online talking about dance music artist-label contracts, especially now that vinyl is selling in such small quantities. Is there anything online I'm missing? If so, I'd be curious to check it out.

Also, feel free to use this thread to share your fucked-up contracts experiences, should you need to vent a little.
