in an interview with wax poetics, henry chalfant (of 'subway art' book fame) says,

"photography was one of the reasons why (the golden age of graffiti art) dried up too. if you were a young kid and you wanted to get style, you could just buy one of my books"

I'd say so but I wouldn't really use it in reference to graf. The image/sterotype of your average African American/rapper/rap fan has changed quite a bit. Its not usually a positive thing either is it?
