well brian cox was really good in it wasnt he? only ever seen the standard theatrical cut, though heard the others are better. recently saw michael manns other film, the weird nazi-era set semi-horror the keep. it looks/sounds brilliant (kuedo must be a fan). the rest of it, im not so sure about.

no idea which version i saw, but the colours and tones that mann used in it were pretty memorable. stylistically, it leaves a very distinct '80s shaped mark. i never actually got around to deciding whether i liked the film or not, though.

funny you should mention jamie, cos he was listening to the michel rubini scored parts of the manhunter ost not too long ago.

I always found this film a bit underwhelming. It's one of those where I can't put my finger on precisely why that is though; there's something a little distanced about it all, and Brian Cox as Lecter/Lecktor only works in principle rather than in practice for me.

Also, I loved the book of Red Dragon, so it suffered by comparison with that, maybe.

Hannibal is surprisingly enjoyable, much more so than the film.

RD I read cover to cover on a plane journey when I was 15 or thereabouts, perfect for that kind of immersive experience. TSOTL I read around the same time, but I don't have as strong memories of the book itself, which may be because I've seen the film so many times by now.

manhunter i think is a great film stylistically - i love all that cool blue 80s lighting - but i could never really care that much about anyone in it. and i couldnt help but find all those old moody/isolated/tortured/individualist/obsessed with the job cop cliches funny - seemed like a film that was trying to be cerebral/existential but failed imo. i kept thinking of national lampoons loaded weapon.

prob would have been different if i saw it when it came out though.
