Androgynous Mind 2 - IWD
Sunday 8th March
Strongroom Bar
120-124 Curtain Road
EC2A 3SQ

Androgynous Mind is back for its second year and this time bigger, louder and at a new location in Shoreditch. This international female collective will take over Strongrooms with a range of workshops, durational performances and a righteous blend of girl music that isn't girly.

International Women’s Day, originally International Working Women’s Day, is marked as a holiday on March 8 in many countries across the world. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday somehow lost its political flavour, however we don’t want to forget its origins and want to celebrate the social and cultural achievements of the women of the world and also raise awareness towards mistreatment of women.

Big Joanie is a black feminist punk band from London. Big Joanie are Chardine (drums & vocals), Kiera (bass & vocals), Steph (guitar & vocals). They're like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling ...of dashikis. Big Joanie formed to make awesome music but also to create a continuum for black punks by presenting a strong, powerful vision of black womanhood.
Their debut EP Sistah Punk is out now!
Meddicine "Meddicine is an analogue electronic artist who plays synthesizer and keyboards over a backing track of industrial soundscapes. Clattering, throbbing and oscillating her way through old sounds and new, Meddicine produces some of the darkest, most-damaged and affecting electronic music you are likely to hear on this planet or any other. Her early work dragged you stumbling down a dark alleyway into a sonic hyperventilation. Her new songs show a wider palette of warmer sounds, luring you into her pulsing incantations with sirenlike vocals and sweet melodies." http://music.meddicine.net/

Shagrat- are an all - girl, all – rocking, experimental rat jam band. Having a laugh once a season since 2006, they do joke items, smooth moves and ultimate intros. With songs such as In The Sea and Mousey Bone paving the way to
possible Eurovision fame and such. Think Rat Pack – gone dirty.

DJs:

Double Header with June Miles-kingston (Ex-Mo-dettes) vs. Lizatron (Invisible City)
June is one of the founder members of the Mo-dettes, a disparate all-girl foursome formed in the late Seventies under the umbrella of Punk. An antidote to male bands and musical banality, the Mo-dettes intent was to show the world women could write and play and have something to say. June went on to play drums and sing with the Fun Boy Three, Everything But The Girl, the Communards and Jimmy Somerville, and many more… Still a session musician, June has recently recorded with Max Eider, and Larry Love from the Alabama Three. June also writes music for film. After completing a Fine Art Degree at St. Martins, June is now studying for an MA in filmmaking at Sussex University. Her film BLONDE was shown recently at the Brighton Film Festival. June is still a campaigner and supporter of women musicians.

Lizatron has played all over London and guested regularly on Resonance FM and NTS and has now assembled a cracking team for this most important of causes. Lizatron has lots of experience from playing in Russia to UK and Germany. She runs East London's Invisible City club night together with Idle Rich. Pooling their international dj-ing experience they are concentrating on a dark and playful mixture of post-punk and electronic music which has punters dancing until dawn. For those of you further afield you can hear their mixes at http://www.mixcloud.com/lizatron/

Chloe Alice Frieda (NTS) ALIEN JAMS started as a show on London’s NTS Radio and has recently turned into a record label. Exploring early electronics as well as showcasing present day experimentation, Alien Jams broadcasts every Sunday from 5-6 pm (GMT), often including guest mixes, along with a series of live gigs and club nights. www.ntslive.co.uk

Hairy J (Waterfalls) has djd for Pop Twinette in London, Lisbon and Paris

Hellenore (Resonance FM) psychedelic music is in her blood with fierce feminism. Tonight her passions can be expected to come together and her righteous and right-on selections will fight the good fight for her.

Interactive Workshops:

A Room of One’s Own - A live Art Installation.

The cobbled courtyard of the Strongrooms will be taken over by an art installation from the Alternative Press. Known for their annual press fairs, AP are pushing the boat with a spatial interpretation of Virginia Virginia Woolf’s seminal essay A Room of One’s Own. Visitors will be asked to respond to the essay by drawing and writing on a translucent cube. The aim, by the end of the day, is to have every surface of the material covered with imagery and thoughts, culminating in a collective voice that celebrates every woman’s need for financial independence and intellectual freedom.
