great comments thread here about whether the americans could ROCK

-

à propos just heard buffalo springfield's "mr soul" again yesterday - a total rip-off of the stones "satisfaction". interesting in w/regards to this us/uk rock debate - like a "control" in a science experiment - because satisfaction rocks defiantly while "mr soul" doesn't at all. it does groove - but it doesn't rock.

perhaps groove is antithetical to rock? answers on a postcard to this thread.

What is the 'rocking' though? Is it just the solidity or could it also be groove?

I recently dropped to a friend that Sleater-Kinney is one of America's last 'important'/'relatively big' rock groups, but they don't particularly rock. Oasis though is rock for days when they want to.

A commenter dismisses ZZ Top as second tier - but I would rate their first few albums as the best examples of "Rock" vs. Rock and Roll out there.

I mean, cmon:

Also, Spirit - who the venerated Led Zep ripped off - has to be in the running.
And CCR.
And The Doors.
Electric Flag.

I guess I just don't understand this at all.

Mr. Soul is an unapologetic rip off though wasnt it? Seem to remember a quote from Young saying he was trying to ape the Stones.
