those tracks which date before 1977 and sound like they could have been made after 1977 by a post-punk act.

hairy yet also concise.
self-conscious meta-commentary.
rock in love with other sounds (or other sounds which sound like rock).

This technically does not fit the criteria being 1979 but it's an Old Wave band - I reckon they must have been listening to some Noo Wave, maybe Talking Heads

Remember hearing "Cheap Sunglasses" on the Tommy Vance metal show when Deguello the album came out and being taken aback by how doggone funky it was

The next album had some outright New Wave aspiring stuff

Actually the feel of that at the start is redolent of "Public Image"

Lyric is rather raunchy.

All the early 70s Cleveland stuff: Electric Eels, bits of Rocket From the Tombs/early Pere Ubu (all their early 7"s came out pre-77). Midwest Rust Belt burnout no hope shit crossed with post-VU worship, autodidactic intellectual currents.

Simply Saucer, especially "Electro-Rock"

Parasites of the Western World "Mo" (actually from 1978 but whatever)

Debris "One Way Spit"

The weirder SF stuff: Chrome, early Tuxedomoon etc

I love this kind of stuff, incidentally. My above examples I guess are more "canonical", at least in my mind, prepostpunk than repurposing Fleetwood Mac/ZZ Top kind of thing, but it's just coming at the same thing from opposite ends.

There's also probably a looooot of fringey kraut/other 70s Euro avant rock stuff that fits the bill, I'll dig around later maybe. Very obviously Neu, which is literally canonical.

Also, Francis Bebey is great. All yall I reckon know Onyeabor. Another personal fave along those lines is Mammane Sani et son Orgue "Lamru"

love the electric eels, love that zz top stuff, but it dates from the new wave era no?

the first Dr Feelgood record is from 75, but totally has a 1979 post punk sparesness
