Bass House/ House n Bass

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH UK BASS

This stuff’s been going for a couple of years now, but I never thought to give it its own thread because I’d confused it with Jackin (as had a number of Dissensians, youtube DJ’s and the curators of Certified Jackin). On reflection however I think Jackin is defined by bouncy, electrohouse-style basslines, which is very different from Bass House.

Sonically it sits between, Deep Tech, Bassline and 4x4 Grime. It eschews the upwardly mobile tendencies of Deep Tech, embracing yobbish, brostep-style bass science and ragga/grime vocal samples. It differentiates itself from Bassline as it is dark, techy and aggressive. It’s swing and spaciousness (echo and reverb) distinguish it from 4x4 Grime.

Tempo wise it’s usually between 125-130 bpm but sometimes a little faster. About 80% of it is straight 4x4, but it has its fair share rhythmic diversity (usually 2step, also some grime, trap, Funky, etc.).

but it is eclectic though isnt it? dont get yourself tied up in knots when it comes to 'defining' house n bass (or jackin/bass house/uk bass etc etc). i'm not denying its quite a useful term, but you can't really draw lines in the sand like you're doing.

Tom Shorterz says he intentionally coined the term 'House & Bass' to be as vague (and thus eclectic) as possible, so in this respect you're right, I am co-opting the term.

However the music I'm referring to (brosteppy, slowed-down bassline) has a homogenised sound; DJ's will play whole sets almost entirely of this type of music (as was the case with Jungle, Garage, Grime, etc.). Unfortunately the scene has appropriated the term 'House & Bass'; therein lies the confusion.

This is eclectic:

Whereas this is more homogenised:

To me dance music looses its potency when it becomes eclectic.

As I said, for a while I'd confused this stuff as being a sub-genre of Jackin so I'd mis-posted (if you go through the Jackin thread others have made the same mistake).

And yes, I prefer this stuff to the Hannah Wants, UK Bass type stuff. Not saying either one is better though.
