Virtual realities

Darned cockwombles.
If you're in London this weekend, there's a free exhibition at IMAX in Waterloo of virtual reality documentaries for the Samsung Gear VR: pretty amazing (and pretty horrifying in its implications for what will happen when this technology becomes ubiquitous) if you haven't tried this before.

it doesn't seem to have been advertised very much at all, hence I thought it'd be worth flagging up...

And if you go, try the one called Catatonic. You'll see why.

I went to this Baboon, cheers for the tip.

I found it fascinating but kinda depressing as well. I wonder what we're going to end up with in 5 years tiime when this sort of stuff starts mixing it with Google Glass. I could imagine people viewing gigs this way. My second thought was obviously "when will someone shoot some porn"?

No worries Danny, glad you found it interesting.

Similar, I found it all slightly horrifying, if very impressive. After seeing the first couple of videos/documentaries/whatever the word for them is, I think my words were 'that's the end of human relationships, then'. To the backdrop of lots of people wearing VR Gear moving their heads around curiously like some kind of cyberinsect swarm.

The porn and horror industries are going to have a field day with this.

Did you manage to see Catatonic?

Yes I did. Lots of fun - pretty powerful as well 'cos so much of your sensorium is immersed. There was a queue for it - was the hot ticket, so to speak. That speaks volumes I guess - "fuck empathising with that guy in a refugee camp, I want to see something all fucked up".

i thought the flyer for the event was badly misjudged in a revealing way - two people with those glasses on their heads totally cut off from the world. It's horrific as you say.
