View Full Version : Poll Ideas - Naughties Nuum

I’d be up for organising a naughties nuum style poll so long as there’s sufficient enthusiasm (at least 10 people willing to participate). So if you guys are interested post some ideas for a poll. Also if you see a poll idea that you’d be interested in participating in say so, so that I can gage if its worth doing.

Top 100 90's nuum would be the obvious one (its been done maybe), followed by a mix - but I dread the prospect

sadmanbarty
15-06-2016, 03:31 PM
I was being a silly goose and presumed there'd already been one.

If I get 8 more people saying they'll participate (presuming you're up for it droid) then I'll do it. Any other takers?

Corpsey

Was gonna say 90s nuum.

I wouldn't be able to contribute to a top (WHATEVER) grime singles of all time, but there are quite a few experts on here so it could be good. Also grime seems to galvanise dissensus somewhat. Could also do greatest grime riddims.

The idea of a poll of tunes that use the Amen break did cross my mind, but maybe that's altogether too niche? Would obviously mainly consist of jungle tunes, though, so easier to mix.

I'd like for somebody to do a list of the best 'this one's for the girls out there' tunes ever but for a bunch of middle aged men to do it would seem patronising and shit.

I can probably do that

sadmanbarty
16-06-2016, 11:42 AM
Seems like its not happening, but I'll give it a little longer. My vote is with a 90's nuum poll. Here are some other suggestions just in case:

Favourite jungle tracks

Favourite dance albums [comps not included]

Favourite dance albums [comps included]

Favourite dancehall tracks [maybe ever, maybe within a specified time range]

Favourite dance track of the 2010’s [deep tech, footwork, afrobeats, bop, etc.]

probably be more inclined to compile best jungle list than anything else. not too broad not too narrow

droid
16-06-2016, 11:47 AM
90s nuum is perhaps the most - useful. But not sure how youd do it TBH. Mine would be a bit of bleep, some early rave, a load of 93, and then jungle all the way with a sprinkling of garage classics at the end.

Not sure how Id handle all those anthems I cant stand anymore.

I'll do it. I had a period of jungle obsession, though obviously I'm an amateur compared to many on here.

Would it be best to restrict to a certain time period? Maybe jungle was restricted to a time period anyway.

luka

93-95

luka
17-06-2016, 10:51 AM
you would have to make a special case for anything falling outside of that time frame

luka

You could easily have a top 50 or top 100. Need to get some more junglists involved though.

luka
17-06-2016, 11:39 AM
im up to 70 so far put it that way

luka
17-06-2016, 11:40 AM
as in 70 essential tunes not every tune ive ever heard in my life

Corpsey
17-06-2016, 11:44 AM
Does that mean every participant in this poll has to submit a top 100?

luka
17-06-2016, 11:49 AM
i dont think thats realistic. if i end up at 90 or 100 padraig and droid will end up with 300

Corpsey
17-06-2016, 12:00 PM
And I'll end up with 5.

Would we run this like the last one - a nomination thread followed by lists then by the masterlist?

Benny B

i like jungle and will happily participate in this poll as long as i don't have to organise it, so big ups barty for stepping up.

I will chip in with a few things i realised from doing the 00s nuum poll though iydm

- with so few ballots and such a huge field, you'd be best keeping it as small and simple as possible, or you'll just end up with tons of tunes getting 1 or 2 votes, loads of ties, and you won't be able to compile a meaningful list of results.

- I think it would be better to make people rank their lists and assign points accordingly to each tune.

- let each person nominate a limited number of tunes - say up to 100 - then, make a ranked ballot. A top 30-50 maybe? Making a top 100 will be too much for some people and not enough for others.

- maybe you could have something like this: out of a ballot of 50, the tunes in peoples top 10 get 5 points, the tunes in peoples top 11-20 get 4 points, etc...Then you just add up the points

good luck barty!

sadmanbarty
17-06-2016, 12:38 PM
I'm thinking I will launch the poll properly on the Monday after the referendum.

Any rules, suggestions (93-95 is pretty much a de facto rule).

How long will people need to compile and send their lists. A week? Two weeks?

Well it seems there's an excitement and a momentum to this, so actually I think I'll launch it this Monday and hope that the referendum doesn't detract too much from it.

Save your long (and not so long) lists for that thread. Keep ranked ballots secret and send them to me in private message. Again, I'll set up the proper thread and announcement on Monday.

Of course my list isn't like yours droid in that mine is coloured by memories of the time, hearing those records again and again and again, on kool, on the streets, at carnival, how jungle and London were one and the same thing at that time. How new it was, not just aesthetically, but culturally, that it meant something and everybody knew it and the pride and fierce joy that went with that.

Difficult to understand for provincial types, far from the red hot centre of power, people who discovered the genre retrospectively, well after the movement had stalled and the moment passed.

Interesting to see the canon you have constructed alone of course, a kind of cargo cult version of jungle.

O Hark! The cry of consumer somnolence, patron of the drive-thru and the ready meal, a thrice bellied, corpulent receptacle, chewing on gristle and spleen and elbow and snout, posturing as gourmand as he rummages through the bin bags and foil trays of memory to emerge with yellow pack labels and burger wrappers.

The men of the wild know their quarry in all its moods and tempers. Axe in hand, they hike and track and stalk and hunt and trap and snare and stab and slash and spear and net. Intimate with each drop of blood, each organ, each sinew, tendon, tooth and claw they alone divine the true soul of the beast.

yeah that's a great breakout. pretty much all proper jungle - very little of what i'd call exploitation tracks (nuttah, incredible, renk, jet star etc) y'see the ragga jungle you have in there (red light [suad], blackstar [rebel mc], tom and jerry [4hero]) - that's all proper stuff from within the nuum.

quite a logistical challenge to make my own list tbh - i've (psychologically at least) packed my nuum twelves away after making that london's dreaming mix. here is the 93-96 section of that for the record BUT it doesn't really include the really big tunes that were my favourites at the time like doc scott's "last action hero" and "drumz", foul play's "murder most foul", dj crystl's "warpdrive", roni size's "warning" and "timestretch", ray keith's "terrorist", deep blue's "the helicopter tune", goldie's "jah", pure's "anything test",, deep blue's "angels in dub" etc - all these and many more being tracks i bought off the wall at black market and section 5.

and then there's the tracks from my old "brick door" mix!!!!

so much astonishing music :)

but M Beat were amazing though! Style, sweet love, rough like me, free. Pop jungle maybe but I dont think the beats are watered down.

never realised there was a video for this. Did it actually bother the charts?

I'm an m beat fan but a)a lot of it is '92 and b)even the stuff that falls within the timeframe seems somehow removed from jungle proper for some reason

don't see why really (apart from all the kerfuffle over general levy/incredible) but nevermind.

Brock out crew-hardcore romance

this is an amazing tune i'd never heard before off your list thats definitely going on mine. nice one

Coincidentally Incredible and Sweet Love both got played in the rave I was at and there's absolutely nothing not classic about those tunes IMO Even if General Levy was a cock.

OriginalNuttah too. Maybe I don't see these tunes the same as you guys cos they were what alerted me to jungle in the first place. But as bait as they are they are anthems, and anthems are essential.

i think luka's list covers most of what i'd choose, but I will definitely campaign for the following works of genius that haven't been mentioned yet.

Urban Jungle -Back in the Daze (Sexy Ladys Mix)

Lloydie Crucial Ribbon In The Sky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exl3gskYb5A

SE9 Crew - So Sweet
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9ZKMwaOXFY

88.3 Featuring Lisa May Wishing On A Star

i'm quite tempted to chuck in a couple of the more happy hardcore flavoured ones from slipmat, red alert & mike slammer, orca, kniteforce etc too.

ok - that wasn't too hard - here's my list of my essential 92-96 tracks. it kinda reflects how the twelve inches are filed in my collection which is in two sections: "hardcore" and "jungle"

before some twit starts to berate me on the absence of any particular tune i should point out that this is a *personal* selection specific to my tastes and interests.

i cant be bothered to go into my opinions on what i described as "the pernicious effect" of reggae on jungle suffice to say i 100% stand my original comments and would kindly request that people who disagree with me closely parse what i actually said. to treat roots like funk - which is what the great, untouchable tunes of 94 did is not to make the music any more reggae-like. you only have to look at the idiocy that engulfed the congo natty label (irie!!!) to understand what i mean - as they took the reggae mantle more and more seriously. and to anyone who thinks there was a stronger connection between jungle and reggae LISTEN to the dancehall rhythms (not the MCs) of the day which were entirely ignored.

Finnegans wake is a synchronicity machine. I read Woebots post then picked up my book and the first sentence reads
"you is feeling like you was lost in the bush, boy? You says: it is a puling sample jungle of woods. You most shouts out"

Simon Reynolds has floated the idea of doing a 1991-93 hardcore poll.

I personally would like to have an "early-90's nuum poll", which would cover hardcore and bleep, as well as proto-hardcore, Kickin Records, SUAD, ragga techno, etc.

My plan would be to launch it on monday with the deadline being in six weeks time. Or do you lot want to have break from dissensus polls for a bit?

Anyone interested?

10 confirmations and I'll do it.

Corpsey

I like the idea, but I am even more clueless re: hardcore than I am jungle. That doesn't matter though cos I didn't take part in the last one either.

Garage poll anyone?

Corpsey and Craner have expressed interest. Reynolds said he'd be up for it a while back.

Luka, Benny, Droid?

Luka might want to ask Ach.

Woebot, Slothtrop, firefinga and pearsall have joined in with one of the other polls, so do any of you fancy it?

anyone else?

I'd like a UKG poll but the numbers on here these days are a bit pathetic unfortunately. :(

I could round up some non dissensian mates to chip in perhaps.

This poll had 49 voters back in 2011 but we'd be lucky to muster up 10 these days

So basically, what corpsey said. I'm up for it in theory though
