View Full Version : The Dissensus Jungle Poll Is Now Open

Are you ready for the bloodclaat jungle techno?!!!!!!!!!!!

Dissensus is choosing and ranking its favourite jungle tracks.

Submit your ballots to me (sadmanbarty) over private message or at sadmanbarty@gmail.com. All are welcome and encouraged to do so.

Ballots should be between 30-100 tracks (no more). Rank them as specifically as you can, however you can do bundles (for example have 10 tracks being in the 71-80 range, but not ranked specifically).

I would like ballots in for Friday the 15TH of July. If some come in over that weekend they may still be counted (though they may not).

Write your entries in the following order: ranking- artists name- track name- (mix). Try to title them as they are titled on discogs.

Make sure you’re entering the correct mix of the track your voting for.

Tracks that are pre-93 and post-95 will likely be disqualified.

Vote with your heart, not for what would be clever, cool etc. Its fine if your choices are obvious or naff. Don’t bother with tactical voting or not voting for something because you think other people will vote for it.

In the mean time you can post long lists, short lists, tracks, playlists and mixes on this thread to get everyone in the mood and jog peoples memories. Don’t give too much away though; we don’t want people knowing the results before they come out.

Results will be revealed incrementally over the Monday-Friday after the deadline.

This may help you with ranking once you’ve got your long list:

How many tracks to be listed?

How many tracks to be listed?

Its up for discussion. If everyone can give ballpark figures of the minimum they're willing to do and the maximum (no more than 100 tracks), then I can figure it out.

I'd say 30 tracks is the minimum ballot.

I suppose in terms of me having to organising it, everyone entering around 50 tracks would be ideal.

As a participant I'm probably more in the 70 range.

i made a long list of about 100, but cutting it down to 50 sounds about right to me.

i'll be amazed if everyone gets their act together in this timeframe though.

Comment under Adam F - Circles:

Clone Protocol10 months ago
Not many people know that Adam F's dad wrote this track whist Adam was locked in the garden shed. His dad (Alvin Stardust) tricked him into going in saying he had left his stash of bud in there. The track was already half finished but Alvin added the Do The Do break and his mum suggested the vocal - which was sung by the organ player from their local church.

From working my way through this random guy's list (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLou5f5eCg8GHtoJayJUBPgwvcZxv_zQxb), I'm beginning to see how the advent of jazz n bass was really the beginning of the end. Most of the ambient shit is boring as fuck.

On Dred bass

Clone Protocol10 months ago
The first dub-plate of this track was stolen by Ray Keith from Music House when the engineer was puking up outside; apparently brought on by the reverse sine wave B-line. This is where the expression 'sick' comes from.
To this day Ray Keith has never played that plate and keeps it in a frame in his spare room.

On Original nutter

Clone Protocol10 months ago (edited)
Shy got the idea for this track in 1993 on a beach in Ibiza. He was looking for crabs in a rock pool wearing a leopard onesy suit and some Spanish guy said Oi you nutter! UK Apache was in the bar but heard about later on the way to a meeting with some rappers from Canada who were interested in setting up a club in Croydon.

On Peshay - piano tune

Clone Protocol5 months ago
Quick FACT: The piano used for this track was once in a Laurel and Hardy film called The Music Box. Peshay lovingly restored and tuned the instrument as it was quite battered having been dropped down some stairs during the filming.
If it wasnt for MC Dropwan talking him out of the idea the track was going to be called Laurel & Hardcore. Shame really.

On super sharp shooter

Clone Protocol10 months ago
Not many people know that this track was written whilst Zinc was locked in his spare room by Hype who was trying to catch a rat. The rat had got into his house and kept chewing through the wires in the home studio set-up. As he was shit scared of the rat Hype offered to catch it so Zinc got his Atari and sampler out and sat in the box room. Shit got real when Hype lifted the carpet up and about 10 rats ran out and one got under Zinc's door. Everyone was shouting and Pascal got bitten. Zinc froze with fear with his finger on the copy sample button... this created the bassline for this track that we have all enjoyed from time to time.

On helicopter tune

Clone Protocol10 months ago
It is not well known but the helicopter sample at the beginning was actually Grooverider making that sound with his lips. He said sample that and call it the Helicopter Tune. The producers won a £100 bet off Fabio after it was finished and signed to Moving Shadow.

On ready or not remix

Clone Protocol10 months ago (edited)
Actually the description is WRONG. The track was made by the studio engineer for Whitesnake in 1995 when they were recording demos for The Fugees. Lauren Hill hated heavy metal and didnt want him in the session so he took the vocal and made a jump-up remix to troll her. He played it at a couple of Whitesnake gigs but the crowd werent reacting so he gave it to his ex wife Vera Jadlough who took it next-door to DJ Zinc who was having an argument with Aphrodite about whether DJ Hype had written it or MC Krunck BackUP who had access to the Fugees acapellas at the time. They all decided never to talk about it. Hence the confusion...

on ltj bukem atlantis

Clone Protocol10 months ago (edited)
Quick Fact: This track represents an interesting period in Danny's life. He'd just made the commercially successful track 'Girl Got Ass' and had some loose change sloshing around so decided to chase his childhood dream of finding an underwater city where mermaids swam around topless. He spent 6 weeks away from the rave scene snorkelling in Brighton swimming further and deeper in his quest. He didnt find much apart from an old Vespa and a Ford Cortina with the doors rusted shut. In the evenings LTJ would read books about lost civilisations and chop up samples from old Detroit anthems. Atlantis was the result.

The Youtube comments section is usually a complete cesspool but under jungle videos it's a different story.

Here's one from 1996 that will be ineligible but which is a darkside rinser, with none of the subtlety of the original but twice the potential for inducing an epileptic fit in the pillhead.

don't think i've ever heard the original! there's many tracks where the original isn't as good though aren't there? best example must be the original of "the dark stranger" which is decidedly inferior.

Dead Dred RMX is better IMO but I think that's probably controversial

Also Renegade Snares original is better IMO which surprises me cos I always thought I preferred the Foul Play version.

I think I prefer the original actually!

One of the great jungle 'tricks' has to be the withholding of the Amen, followed by the release (Kraken-like) of the Amen with accompanying female scream of orgasmic ecstasy. Sort of replicates what the crowd would probably do with their mouths as those cymbals kick in: 'YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAA AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!'

like even just ranking the best tune from one particular artist is hard enough.

for example i'm finding it literally IMPOSSIBLE to decide which is better between maximun style and airfreshner (never mind all the other 4 hero stuff)

or valley of the shadows/dark stranger remix

i can't understand it/roll the beats/gunshot?

being with you/open your eyes remix/null lines remix/renegade snares remix???

Hope this works... I ve done lists on my discogs profile of the UK Hardcore Early Jungle - Jungle - DnB roughly according to release dates, based on the actual months (with the help of reviews and DJ playlists in magazines since Iwas a bit too young to have caught the early stuff myself). I think Jungle began in the autumn of 1992 so here are my first few lists:

https://www.discogs.com/lists/UK-Hardcore-Early-Jungle-1992-09/242041

Favs from that month:
Trip II The Moon pt 1 and 2
Kaotik Chemistry - LSD EP
Rufige Cru - Darkrider

https://www.discogs.com/lists/UK-Hardcore-Early-Jungle-1992-10/242043

Favs from that month:
Acen ‎– Trip II The Moon (Kaleidoscopiklimax)
Bay-B-Kane – The Return Of Bay-B-Kane
Egyptian Empire - The Horn Track
Enforcers Vol1
Foul Play Vol2
Jungle House Crew ‎– Total Kaos E.P.
Mastersafe ‎– Aspirations E.P.
Oaysis ‎– Loft Conversion E.P.

https://www.discogs.com/lists/UK-Hardcore-Early-Jungle-1992-11-12/243915

Favs from November/December '92:

4 Hero - Journey From The Light
A Guy Called Gerald - Like A Drug
Dance Conspiracy - Dub War
Nebula II - Peace Maker/X-Plore-H-Call and the Remix EP
Prodigy - Out Of Space
Nino - The Gun
Wots My Code - Dubplate
Oaysis - Incredible Bass
Tek 9 - Del De go go
The Brothers Grimm - Exodus/Field of Dreams

I might come up with a list of favs ... but it's so hard to pick. That stuff/era was so brimming with excellent material.

I've only had one private ballot so far. It was a top 50 that's vaguely ranked.

I'm hoping I can get a few specifically ranked ballots (or at least ballots that are ranked in bundles of 10) and I'll supplement those with any remaining long lists that haven't been ranked specifically.

The best thing to do would be to try and rank ballots as best you can, even if you can't get a specific, numbered list.

Of course the methodology will change if necessary.

Bukem came on the scene, introduced 'intelligent' D&B and changed the whole game. At the same time the really roughneck ragga jungle was exploding alongside these tunes, and causing all sorts of drama in the London venues... It went from being happy clappy pills n thrills to all eyes and teeth in dark corners of the clubs, too many crack spliffs being smoked, and people getting stabbed. Still great times though...

Hey yall. There is absolutely no way I'm going to finish a poll, especially one I'd feel good about, by Friday. Just don't have the time to sit and listen to music these days. Maaaaybe could get it done by Tuesday, I guess, over the long weekend. If that means mine won't count, no worries, but thought I'd bring it up.

Either way, it's nice to go back through all this stuff, it's been a minute. Looking forward to discovering at least a couple new tunes. In that spirit, here's a few corkers that might be on my own list that haven't (I think) been mentioned yet:

The Fat Controller - In Complete Darkness

I know, not quite within the 93/94 timeframe but I do think this is fitting, the tracks I have chosen have already the "jungle" vibe (imo at least):

Late '92 favs:

Trip II The Moon pt 2
Kaotik Chemistry - LSD EP
Rufige Cru - Darkrider
Acen – Trip II The Moon (Kaleidoscopiklimax)
Bay-B-Kane – The Return Of Bay-B-Kane

Oaysis – Loft Conversion E.P.
4 Hero - Journey From The Light
A Guy Called Gerald - Like A Drug
Dance Conspiracy - Dub War
Nebula II - Peace Maker/X-Plore-H-Call and the Remix EP
Prodigy - Out Of Space

Tek 9 - Del De go go
The Brothers Grimm - Exodus/Field of Dreams

http://www.theransomnote.co.uk/music/gone-rave/gone-to-a-rave-51-paul-ibiza-gets-real/

When you say ‘it’s not yours’ who are you addressing that to?

Well going back to what we said earlier about the racial tension, when I came into this rave culture scene there were white DJs and there were black DJs, and a lot of the white DJs found jungle a threat. The early drum n bass got shut down. The jungle became an inner city black culture, it was strong and vibrant and it sort of slowed down the white DJs thing. People were moaning, they were complaining about it. A lot of the white DJs were saying, ‘ahh it’s too moody, it’s too dark, I don’t like it’, but it grew so big. After ’94 the drum n bass boys fought back.
At the time there was a lot of controversy around the name drum n bass– when people started using the term drum n bass there was a feeling in some corners that this was to hide the scene’s black roots

Well, I’m glad you said that. The name drum n bass is of black origin anyway, it said on my dad’s old records “drum n bass or version” – but what we think of as drum & bass now, I hate drum & bass. It’s moody. OK, Im not gonna say I don’t like it, but… Take Rob Playford. Rob Playford used to work for me in the early Ibiza days. He was a DJ. He used to come to my house with his long straggly hair, sat down in my house and said, I want to be a DJ, so I said, come on then. Colour had stopped mattering to me by this point, so I said come on then, and I took Rob Playford under my wing. So he then started doing his own label, all the Moving Shadow stuff, calling his rave Voodoo Rave. And I said, hold on Rob, I didn’t think you liked the black culture, why are you calling you’re rave Voodoo Rave, all of that. And the minute he started making money he came out with this thing called Intelligent Drum n Bass, and I started seeing what was going on here. The scene was splitting- jungle is black and drum n bass is white, is that what you’re telling me? And that’s what was happening. It started with Moving Shadow with a record called Snow.

These factors differentiate hardcore from jungle (I'm sure there are others as well):

Tempo- Jungle's at 160 + whereas hardcore is slower.

Jungle tends to deviate from snare emphasis on the 2 and 4.

Hardcore uses staccato riffs

Hardcore tends to loop a break in whole bar loops. Jungle chops those breaks up, uses multiple breaks, pitchshift etc.

Not so much chipmunk vocals, mentasm or italo-piano in jungle

Luke, the last 3 proto-jungle tunes you posted all deviate from the standard 2 and 4 snare emphasis.

nah you are confusing "well produced" with "tasteful". there's nothing tasteful about "euphoria (nino's dream)" or the Acen singles.

i do think of most of the production house stuff as hardcore though, because of the nutt-E vibe.

Producition House had a few incarnations. I think of them primarily as a mainstream old skool/rave label. Very prominent between 89-92. A great run in 93 thanks to Acen, then gradually dropping off (though lasting longer than most of their peers) until 95.

I'd also add that low bass is more important in jungle than hardcore. There are a lot of hardcore tracks that don't feature really low bass. This is rare in jungle.

808 boom bass is very common in jungle and not in hardcore. On the other hand digi-dub bass (reggae bass lines played with synthesised sine waves) are common in hardcore, but rare in jungle.

Done five seconds of research

Admits Liam, “There’s loads of quality jungle tracks around. The problem was that a lot of people thought it was so easy to make hardcore that they just knocked out white labels and flooded the market with crap. But this year there’s been a lot of intelligent jungle. Moving Shadow are the leading label.”

But Liam still doesn’t like the attitude and moody atmosphere that so often surrounds jungle ’94, and which is so different from the nutty, luv’d up vibe of ’ardkore ’92.

“The reason I got into rave was that hip-hop had gotten too much into attitude. To me, the jungle scene now is really confused. One minute they’ll play something really uplifting and the next it’s dark and gloomy. Also, that music’s lost a bit of energy. Because it’s so fast, people don’t dance to the 160bpm drums, they lock into the reggae baseline, which is half speed. So you dance really slow. With techno, you dance to the full-on beat. The stuff I really rate is European, like CJ Bolland and a lot of the German artists.”

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/dec/02/from-rocks-backpages-the-prodigy-classic-interview-1994-melody-maker

and

Liam Howlett: I haven’t listened to that album in its entirety since I made it. When they played it the other night I listened to it in my car and took a detour just to take all of it in. I just couldn’t believe how long it was! There are bits that I actually can’t remember how I did it. I obviously did, but I couldn’t remember how I made the sound. That record was a reaction to everything that was going on around us, even the jungle scene. The tempo was going up and up, so I thought fuck that we’ll go down and we wrote ‘Poison’, which was a hip hop track. ‘No Good’ was a reaction to the shit Euro dance thing that was going on. It’s an angry album.

http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/20659/1/liam-howlett-lord-of-the-dance

Sounds like he didn't like the tempo, primarily. The 'confusion' over mood thing is interesting, insofar as that's one of the things I love about jungle. The loved up intros and breakdowns and the stripped down aggression of the drops... And actually, it arguably all went 'wrong' for some people when it became full-on dark time during the Metalheadz/TechStep era. (Coexisting with the jazzy shit, up to the end of the 90s, I guess?)

DNB, whcih I did used to be into, for my money went wrong because it DID go so fast, up to and past 170bpm, at which point the beats become necessarily formulaic and rigid.

That's a general sort of consensus, yes, although Luke maintains that it all went wrong in 1994.

94, from my brief research over the last week/s, is when jungle was absolutely crystallised as a genre. You know how genres sort of emerge and coalesce and there's that year or so where they can just be what they are, without shooting off in different directions? Maybe that's bollocks. But 93 a lot of tunes are still hardcore.

Luka will not appreciate this comparison but dubstep had the same thing. It was dark garage at one point, then it became dubstep, and for about a year or two it was 'just' that. Then all these other influences came in and it split apart...

I've got a half-arsed theory that there are people who want homogenous and predictable stuff when they go out and there are people who respond more to varied and unpredictable stuff, and that while the former are much more numerous, they also take a lot longer to get their heads around anything new. Which is why a new style normally has a couple of years of grace between coalescing as a coherently identifiable thing and turning into an ossified parody of itself.

Caspar Pound

Pound was not, as some have suggested, a descendant of the famous and controversial poet Ezra Pound; his step-brother is Labour MP Stephen Pound and his grandfather was the biographer Reginald Pound. Originally from Peterborough, he shot to fame at age 19 with the single "Total Confusion", and then founded the Rising High and Sapho labels. As The Hypnotist he became a star in Germany, and played at the Love Parade to thousands of ravers.

Caspar Pound died on 30 April 2004, aged 33.

I'd like to recommend J Rolla's mixes here http://www.mixcrate.com/jamesrolla/dj_mixes

Definitely one of my favourite DJs ever who I've never seen play live.

Real shame he never made any more tunes.

I sympathise with FF cos I've got that obsessive compulsive urge to go through every single jungle release in 1993/4/5 in order to make the perfect list. It's just that in this case I have decided I'm too lazy to do this.

I would have made a ballot If I had started earlier.

Sadmanbarty wrote people can also write lists to jog people's memories and I thought my lists might help there.

Nah I don't wanna make a perfect list. I omitted lots of tracks which went into my original lists but weren't good enough for my actual "best of each month"-choices.

It's amazing just how much great stuff this scene was able to put out in it's prime.

are there some cd compilations that do a good job in collecting this cool stuff? omni trio "deepest cut" (titled "music for the next millennium" in the states) is a good one, also suburban bass "base in your face" and sub bass "a history of hardcore" part 1 and 2.

any others come to mind?

Woebot of all people did a blog post on that very topic a few months ago:

http://www.woebot.com/2015/11/hardcore-jungle-and-drum-bass.html

I think you could get the CD version of most of these via discogs relatively cheap.
I have a few of the listed, the best one for my taste is "Darkside II" - really all killers if you are into the "Darkcore/Darkness"sound

In contrast to some of the exhaustive research that's been going on, I cued thirty odd tunes on youtube and then sorted them roughly in order of how much they made me jump around the living room. No liability accepted or apologies offered for stone cold classics that I've missed or obvious cheesy stuff that I've rated.

D&B is always about new dubs over all else though isnt it? even that new philly blunt comp, it has a lot of jungle classics... remixed for today lol. which is good in a sense, at least it hasnt lapsed into broad retroisms, keeps it moving forward, etc, etc, but idk if goldie or anyone else whos been in it 20 years could really make a fair minded, objective list, without seeing it through current tastes/needs.

Hey yall. Not gonna make it with a poll. Don't wanna ask for further extensions, although thank you to sadmanb for the previously granted ones. Just don't have the time to sit and listen to tunes these days. Wouldn't feel good voting when I haven't made the effort to go over an absolute ton of stuff that isn't fresh in my head. Not exhaustive research or anything, I mean like the basics. I'll continue to chime in periodically with obscure gems and eventually (probably in like 6 months or something) I'll put up a proper poll of my own. Thanks to everyone who got it together to vote, look fwd to hearing the results.

They won't change the results this week, but I may do a revised list at some point in the future if enough come in and the results are significantly altered. Ranked ballots are best, but I can also use long lists. Send over private message or sadmanbarty@gmail.com using the title Jungle Poll 2.

If contributors feels like revising their ballot, that's also welcome.

I really enjoyed this interview. Luka (and anyone else) - what are other interviews, documentaries etc that challenge/vary from the 'canonical' history of jungle/drum 'n' bass that even I -as someone with very limited knowledge of jungle - have heard 1 000 000 times?

reminds me of this great interview.
http://www.theransomnote.co.uk/music/gone-rave/gone-to-a-rave-51-paul-ibiza-gets-real/
