My first inaugural CHOON OF THE DAY is

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPZUo_hps9w

Kate Bush - Watching You Without Me

I have chosen this one cos the bassline is totally fucked. Like a big animal dying, or being disturbed in its sleep.

Plus she's singing like that dwarf in Twin Peaks. I think she's telling me to pick this as CHOON OF THE DAY, but backwards.

What is your CHOON OF THE DAY?

I didn't want to jump the gun on my CHOON OF THE DAY today, but Spotify shuffle has plonked some manna in my ears so...

Krome & Time - The Slammer

Because in these dark times, this is a slice of pure, unadulterated joy. Proof that cheese can be divine (especially on crackers with some grapes on the side).

Great idea for a thread. Is it bad form to post a choon when there's already been a choon today? I want to plonk this here:

http://youtu.be/81ZXPeIKWEM

Spot on description of the bassline in the KB song in the first post. As a bassist myself I'm intrigued at how the sound was created - I guess an acoustic double bass with some kind of weird filter applied to it.

Corpsey
23-06-2016, 03:24 PM
No, not bad form, the idea is that EVERYONE can post ONE CHOON per day.

Here is mine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yqaFp981Yw

Vybz Kartel - Yuh Love

This seems a bit bait to post cos everybody probably knows it but then again this isn't about being obscure it's about bringing the joy of creation into all our lives, and realistically I'm not going to find anything better than this today.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great song, but its very much focus group, manufactured pop. Disclosure is popular, so is Kenrick Lamar's 'Alright'. They just put the chorus of the latter on the music of the former. Results are fantastic though.

2016 Pop Choon of the day 3. Rihanna- Work

This might actually be the last 2016 one I post for now. I canít think of any other pop choons from 2016.

I havenít been keeping up at all with dancehall this year, but I imagine this is still some of the best music to come out of the genre this year.

Drakeís bit is awful, but that goes without saying.

Not feeling those Ariana Grande choons too much tbh but this isn't a thread for nitpicking and criticising, nor for division and infighting, which brings me neatly to

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjVvh7wEDSQ

CE CE ROGERS - SOMEDAY (1987)

After acknowledging how profoundly depressing a week in the news its been, you feel like reaching either for bleak music, for confirmation, or optimistic music, for comfort. I'm inclined towards the latter, and Chicago house music has a lot of these 'we shall overcome' songs. It was a toss up between this and Sterling Void's 'Alright'.

Music isn't going to ever solve the world's problems, but it DOES unify people across cultures and countries, and there's a lot to be said for that.

NOTE: Currently I'm so bored at work that the 'Someday' I'm dreaming of is Saturday.

There's been some chat about 1993 tracks and whether they're jungle or not. This one's from 93, but I'd put it firmly in the hardcore camp. D-Force is an alias of Red Alert and Mike Slammer.

"You are for me and me is for you"

Something very painful about the italo-piano/ chipmunk vocal sections. It feels like the loss of a loved one.

The bass that comes in at 2.10 is calmly diabolic, like poison working its way through your blood stream. This is complemented by the hellish choir barking over the top.

The contrast between these two feels gives the impression that the badboy bravado is merely a front to disguise a broken-hearted, sentimental anguish.

The Hulk Hogan theme song? Born in the USA? Rhapsody in Blue? American Slore?

After a grand 5 minutes of deliberation I've gone for this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZBKFoeDKJo

Cos 1) It's Monday and a bit of chirpiness might make a difference 2) It's 2016 and (See previous reason) 3) It's so quintessentially American (or at least so mid 20th century American), so youthful and optimistic and chirpy.

I don't even know if I LIKE it that much. I prefer God Only Knows, like everyone else. It's TOO chirpy. But it might make richly ironic music, to soundtrack the muted video footage of a Donald Trump rally.

Because i have a soft, spongey, gooey spot for this tune, which I've only just remembered, and its perfect for a sunny day like this'n. Tea you are wrong. It's the sax which takes it over the top. I don't think you understand pastiche aesthetics.
Anyway it's the video which is the real work of art. There's such a deep sadness at the heart of being a middle aged man, so much loss. So much shame. Such humiliation.

Good idea, I'll retroactively add some commentary. I could write a whole essay on this one:

Luka- Itís Greenwhich

The juxtaposition between the infantile (the bass, use of single clause sentences, non-sequiters, etc.) and the bittersweet (the strings); of course nostalgia for our childhood is often bittersweet.

Similarly there is the (often simultaneous) evocation of both the mundane and the magnificent. On the one hand talk there is talk of pubs and pies and on the other Luka references history, religion and astrology.

These two themes are reconciled as Luka calls on the audience to view our mundane lives with the magical sense of wonder of a child; to see the thames as "sparkling", etc.

That's a good analysis Barty I think you've done it justice. I'd just like to point out that although I didn't actually make the video in the sense of pushing the button and moving the mouse I came up with the concept and selected the photos and the comic sans font.

I always get the intro synths confused with Berlin "Take My Breath Away" that sort of 'new wave' portentous intro, but Berlin's is so gaseous its almost like some sort of substance I can't describe, while The Cars song is meant to come in with sentiment. Its not a particularly soothing song for all the concern, and the way the bassist/singer really looks like he's sneery in it, as well as the patronizing look of Ocasek. Its one of those songs where the cruelty comes out but it never sounds aggressive or vicious sonically.

I guess Omar S is the master of working out four or five really strong riffs/melodies and then just pulling them in and out to keep things interesting. The killer element here is the reverb saturated two note fanfare...

That's not why I picked it. Perhaps I'm thinking of such things because this is one which just seems to grow more comforting and charming to revisit with every month. It only came out last year, but feels like an established standard already.

EDIT: Changed to 'Love's So Far Away'

Just discovered this album today. It's along the lines of Roy Ayers, and perfect for a crystalline summer's day such as today's crystalline summer's day.

R,I.P MR. BYRD....THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES AND GREAT MUSIC!
Review by Steve Huey: Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives free rein to producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell, who crafts a series of tightly focused, melodic pieces often indebted to the lengthier orchestrations of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. They're built on the most straightforward funk rhythms Byrd had yet tackled, and if the structures aren't as loose or complex as his earlier fusion material, they make up for it with a funky sense of groove that's damn near irresistible. Byrd's solos are mostly melodic and in-the-pocket, but that allows the funk to take center stage. Sure, maybe the electric piano, sound effects, and Roger Glenn's ubiquitous flute date the music somewhat, but that's really part of its charm. Black Byrd was state-of-the-art for its time, and it set a new standard for all future jazz/R&B/funk fusions -- of which there were many. Byrd would continue to refine this sound on equally essential albums like Street Lady and the fantastic Places and Spaces, but Black Byrd stands as his groundbreaking signature statement.

Yeah waiting with half-interest for a NYC show b/c I wonder if more of the original pre-Only line-up shows up alongside Glenn, but I doubt it. His voice is pretty toast these days, but I forgot that his older songs didn't have much singing of high quality beyond some of the earliest material, so it doesn't affect it too badly. Think its a little 'showbizy' for a punk band but they're getting paid boatloads for these shows probably so why not go nuts with money.

I was saying elsewhere on the internet, Glenn Danzig has been an influential rock musician and written high quality tunes (from a US perspective) for close to 15 or 16 years consistently. That's significantly rare, and its not just punk/metal campy stuff.

Goddamn. 2016 has taken Bowie, Phife, Lemmy and Prince: is it going to take Dissensus too?

It's endemic of a more general problem that there hasn't been any truly innovative music in the past 2 or 3 years. I'm hoping the Garage poll will generate some excitement.

I think Kelela is the best thing to come out of Night Slugs/Fade to Mind. This EP had at least three sure shots on it, this being one of them. A great Cassie song, and sung better than Cassie could manage herself.

KATE BUSH - BLOW AWAY (1980)

"Blow Away (for Bill)" commemorates her lighting director Bill Duffield, killed in an accident at Poole Arts Centre during her 1979 tour.[10] The song links his name to those of several music stars who died in the previous decade - Minnie Riperton, Keith Moon, Sandy Denny, Sid Vicious, Marc Bolan - and one earlier icon - Buddy Holly.

There was that period in rap, prior to Run DMC (I'm guessing) where disco and rap intersected:

FYI: 85% of the time someone posts a tune without any accompanying words, I will not listen to it on general principle.

FYI LUKA: Generally speaking I wouldn't allow such flagrant bypassing of the 1 CHOON PER 1 DAY rule but you pulled a sort of trick by having all the tunes have the same word in. Where's 'Babylon Toothbrush' though?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wATCpomh72Y

ROSKA - CLIMATE CHANGE

The only funky tune (so far as I'm aware) to address the ecological catastrophe of global warming? Yes, but that's not why. The why is cos it reminds us of those halycon days when funky sounded like nothing else on pirate radio, and Roska was one of the forerunners of making loud brittle crashy bashy tracks that started a carnival in our trousers.

ur...not much to say about a choon called "work it to the bone", is there? ;)

but rules are rules, goddamnit! so guess i could say it's from the late 80s and just reissued, has a cool minimal/tribal chicago house groove, nice vocal sample, would get me moving on the dance floor, etc.
