MIGOS feat. Lil Uzi Vert - Big Bad and Boujee

Came out in 2016, but shot to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2017. Like 'Black Beatles' was arguably memed to the top (https://theringer.com/migos-bad-and-boujee-billboard-hit-56599b15186a#.pqzs1m5hf). I like the song, would never have predicted it would be number 1 song in the US though!

yeah i saw a million million memes starting droptop raindrops before i knew what the fuck they was going on about . i think its a good song though i like it.

weird number one. doesnt even feel like a single. its a song youd expect in the middle of a mixtape.

Corpsey

Kind of ties in with The Song Machine, actually - the conformism of taste, the desire people have to be listening to what everyone else is listening to. Without the memes, there's surely no way it would have made the number 1 spot.

Edit: Metro Boomin's first number one!

Trina feat. Tory Lanez - Damn

Quite like this, feels like a bit of a throwback. Trading bars over a faintly Mafiosi-ish beat.

i like the trina song, beat is a bit like UGK's international players anthem (or something else i cant quite place, a jay-z/kanye track), but the lyrics dont really fit the beat.

My main problem with RTJ is El-P rapping. I quite like the beats in the tunes you posted. That 80s style 808 boom. Didn't make me want to check the album tbh but RTJ isn't really my thing.

Can Danny Brown actually do anything but that squawky voice these days? You could practically pick any verse he's done in the past few years and switch it with that one and I'd be hard pressed to notice.

i never understood why people hated him as a rapper, except that it seems a holdover opinion from the 90s for a lot of ppl who were into rawkus at the time.
as a producer i think he peaked a decade or more ago.
but i dont begrudge mr independent as fuck making a bit of money. hes done it his way, more or less, even if hes softened the edges.

Yeah. I don't listen to those last two guys but I've not heard anyone from the new skool doing that old NY style as convincingly and freshly as Marciano. To your point about it being 'dark' - this is definitely true of a lot of his music and a lot of 'Rosebudd's Revenge', but I actually appreciate that the tone is a bit more varied on here. There's some relatively light-hearted, or at least chirpy, beats on here.

He really takes me back to what I used to value most in (NYC) rappers - intricately written braggadocio with a cool tone to it, noirish vibes, etc. Though in many respects he's not like Cam'ron, he does have that thing of mixing multisyllable, knotty writing with ''ignant'' content.

That's an interesting qualifier.

I've griped to WebE about this but both Westside and Conway to me are just Uncle Murda style generic NYC rappers who got ahold of the 'right' beats. If they were A-Mafia nobody'd give a shit about them, but they have good managers. And both fucking suck.

It's def better than the self-titled one he put out the other week. 'emotional future' is pretty damn similar to 'trap future' but the beats are a lot better and sound like they weren't just throw-aways resurrected from the rubbish bin. 'fresh air' is really hittin' the spot atm, his singing is great

hmm, i never thought of their style as a gimmick. its just a great style to me. its not das efx.

bad and booji w/lil uzi vert and the song with 2 chainz are the highlights so far.

the beat for that swizz beats/nas/dmx/jay-z/jadakiss track he played recently on his B2B set with just blaze is monstrous.

i like the new roc marci album more than any of his others, weirdly. his best beat selection i reckon.

I quite like the new kendrick, at least two of the three beats in it are good IMO. Second beat sounds like the Alchemist.

I kinda wish Kendrick was better than he is lol he's a real substantive/experimental alternative to Drake/Future etc. (not to shit on those guys) but sometimes he really sounds like he's rhyming for the sake of riddling. At least silly voices were minimised on this new track.

It sent me back to some of his older tunes such as this:

Nice new album from Kendrick. Still virtuosic in crafting head-boppable songs out of social commentary, but the production is not nearly as ambitious as To Pimp A Butterfly. The neo-soul is more neo than soul and the bangers are not anywhere near the level of the ones on Good Kid Mad City either.

DNA, Humble and that one with U2 are my highlights.

Corpsey
14-04-2017, 04:09 PM
Lately I've been feeling MikeWillMadeIt is one of the best producers of this era and 'DNA' backs that up, especially after the beat switch. I want MikeWill to produce everything these days. A Swae Lee solo album first, then a reunion with Future, and so on...

I like the album a lot. Leaving aside the hype, leaving aside even the content, I just find his music enjoyable to listen to. (Don't really like 'Humble' though.) This new album is mixed down to perfection. And I appreciate how you never know exactly what he's going to come up with. He definitely has a 'sound' but he's experimental almost to a fault.

I'm sure Luka will hate this album btw :crylarf:

I started doing a playlist last night of just Future stuff. I intended to listen to his whole post-Pluto run. Obviously didn't get that far but considering I only just got up to 'Monster' there are a lot of bangers. (Note: some of the tracks I've included aren't my favourite tracks but help show his evolution , e.g. the first track off 'Honest', which show how poppy he was trying to go in those days.)

https://open.spotify.com/user/11180051859/playlist/4vA5udpTc0BgD69D7rxWzD

I ditched the concept, too, and starred adding pre-Pluto tracks too. A lot of his notable tapes, esp. pre-Pluto, aren't on Spotify, unfortunately.

BTW: that was a subliminal connection I made, but I actually think this music is reminiscent of Main Attrakionz and co a bit. Future - Super Trapper

I really should check these albums out properly at some point (Future/Hndrxx). For some reason I can't bring myself to do it. So I discover good tracks on shuffle.

Swae Lee + MikeWillMadeIt solo album needs to happen (or just another Rae Sremmurd)

Stumbled across this by typing in 'hotmail' to my search bar

https://www.hotnewhiphop.com/top-50-best-young-thug-solo-songs-of-all-time-news.37355.html

Gonna run through when I get time. 'Danny Glover' is 32nd, which seems outrageous to me - my head having been blown off by it when it first came out. But 'Halftime' is reassuringly highly placed.

Been browsing our yearly hip hop threads and aside from rediscovering some great songs I am feeling a bit sad that my engagement with hip hop has dropped off in the last few years. Evidently I used to really dig through new releases (and old ones too). I don't anymore. Perhaps it couldn't last forever. I think Spotify in particular really dictates the limits of what I listen to. Never go on dat piff or 2dopeboyz or hotnewhiphop anymore, let alone rap blogs.

If this is how Waka raps now he's changed a lot!

Kinda reminds me of Gunplay, vocally

somebody in here has to be listening to 03 Greedo right?

anyway this slaps and was my way of getting into his music because mixtapes with 45 songs look daunting to me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fZ52phW6sM&t=64s
