missed the roots manueva show last night at knitting factory

but i went to the after party at this really cool bar at kent & south fifth

and i must say, THESE WERE THE BEST DJs THAT I'VE HEARD SINCE I DON'T KNOW WHEN

they played real-deal junglistic music then into raw house back into junglism back to raw house, etc, and some very raw 2-step here and there

(i.e., jungle is not drum + bass and it ain't the rebel mc and don't let anyone tell you otherwise)

(which isn't to say the rebel mc isn't good, he's just overly developed)

unfortunately i can't remember the names of the djs as i lost it completely and downed an endless stream of scotch rocks

and sadly, it was a one-off

o/w i'd be there every weekend

even so, everything about this place was right on it

the crowd, the vibe, the chemistry

all the mc's were white english people, except for roots manueva

and one was a girl

they didn't over-work the mic and they kept the party rocking

not that the mc's were particularly good or anything

this party was all about the DJ's

overall impression = very very very very very impressed

six stars on a scale of five

in general, keep your eyes out for places & parties on kent b/c another place on kent was recommended to me a while ago but i've yet to check it out

of course all my british mates played it off like you can hear this any night of the week if you know where to go in london, manchester, etc

but judging by how they, too, were not about to leave the dance floor -- surely they were no less impressed than me

not sure how the night ended as my memory blacks out at some point

i don't know, i was just trying to identify them from the description of the music and people.

the mc's were white, except for roots manueva

but nothing exceptional about the mc's

it was the dj who blew my mind -- some black guy from london

and then some white english guy took over at a couple of points

heh, thanks for the implied compliment..

but we live in Oakland, California. And Kid K has never had dreads.

if I still lived there, it's definitely the kind of bill I'd try to get on.

man, I miss brooklyn.

this is by way of partial correction, as i've yet to talk directly with the man in the know . . . .

but the dj who completely and utterly rocked the roots manuva after party is, i believe, named Malcolm and he's from Sheffield or some such parts, i.e., Yorkshire -- not London

(needless to say i have no ear for accents)

AND he's supposed to return to nyc in november

the name of the dj is "malcolm" and he's from sheffield -- i.e., he's the guy who played the roots manuva after party (whether that means he's roots manuva's dj is a question i can't answer)

he was evidently in nyc last week, but nobody told me about it at the time

he'll supposedly be back in nyc this fall

(sorry! -- just now realized that i had already provided the dj's name two postings up above)

(malcolm once again crossed my mind b/c he's the last dj i raved about before i started testifying about kech in connection w/ the old skool rave last week -- so sorry for this seemingly random and purposeless updating of an old thread)
