but they draw the totally wrong conclusions from this and don't look at aesthetics. so you get the inanity of 'it's all music maaaan' or genres are patriarchal constructions designed specifically to oppress UC Burkley and UC santa Cruz and Harvard students in 2019.

genres are stifling and confusing but they can be good shorthand for sets of aesthetic propositions and emotional territories. it feels like the second a genre name can be coined though then that means the aesthetic propositions have already been (or are close to being) fleshed out and the attendant emotional territories explored and genre becomes less useful for describing what's going on and more useful for describing what's happened.
