ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE how could i forget
mind you in retrospect it could be argued that it homogenized the british techno fraternity by giving it a template of synthwash/breaks???

The Drum and Bass compilations (1-5) had some of my favourite jungle tracks

Early Tresor comps (1-3) were good

Greensleeves comps seconded

The Headz compliation was both an introduction to trip hop and it’s definitive primer

Harry Smith's has surely altered as many lives as any.

The mention of 'Let them Eat Jellybeans' and the Cherry Red comps makes me think: among the many other things it was, the (broadest definition) post-punk milieu was a great time for compilations of contemporary music. All those local scene comps, all those hardcore comps, all those random german/french/belgian/etc. electro comps. . . And yet, weirdly, I've never found a posthumous post-punk compendium that really captured the feeling of intensity and scope of the era. I'm sure that's partly due to the logistical/financial difficulties in securing exactly the tracks one wants. . .

It's widly inconsistent, but the LAFMS box ('The Lowest Form of Music') is one of the more lovingly crafted celebrations of the margins of music I've heard.

Also inconsistent but almost always a lot of fun, I admire the work that Chuck Warner is doing at hyped2death--the real Nuggets of post-punk DIY.

Some comps that stand out in my own boxes:
Favourite electros:
Crucial Electro (Hashim, Captain Rock, Man Parrish)
Electro 5 (Aleem, Egyptian Lover, Mantronix, Dr Jekyll)
Reactivate 1: Belgian hardcore with pavlovian riffs, discussed before on this site...
Grooverider’s Prototype Chronicles 1 – as a scene retreated into itself, this still contained more than a few corkers
Secret Life of Trance 1: honest! Back when Cosmic Baby/MFS/Vath-type trance was still interesting; sounds more like modern german techno (kalkbrenner, alien) than the gurnaphon trance it became…
Though I suppose they mostly look back rather than forward: What about artist-own compilations? ie, Warp’s Plaid collection, Ray Keith’s retrospective, etc…

My first post after months of reading is also a shameless plug. For all Londoners/non-Glstnbryers, Cinestatic and WhoreCull are hosting a club night, Extropia, this Saturday (25 June), 8pm-3am upstairs at Clockwork, 96-98 Pentonville Road, Islington, N1. This night of polyrhythmic sound on sound will cost you nothing if you get there before 10pm (and £4 after). Cull DJs, Confablog, Casagrande from Manchester and Other Worlds’/Wah Wah 45s’ Max Cole will join the dots between maracatu and deep broken techno, and Smunk goes live with his trumpet electronica. There’ll also be art from the Cinestatic collective, visuals and WhoreCull offshoot Egophone’s debut short film. Come down and get involved...

The Button Down Mind Of Daniel Bell
one of the albums that brought me back into the techno fold
Triple R - Friends
Techno with warmth
Coldcut - 70 Minutes of Madness
eclecticism BUT still good, similar feelings for Solid Steel Presents DJ Food & DK - Now, Listen!

Motion seconded where the Coldcut JDJ / Daniel Bell mixes are concerned :)

For my own part, I'm still feeling Recloose's Jigsaw Music mix on Eskimo; and Erlend Oye's DJ-Kicks mix from last year.

Matthew Herbert's Tresor mix "Let's All Make Mistakes" is pretty classic, too.

Christ, this thread could run and run...
