Bookshops in London

What's the best place in London to buy experimental fiction and/or books on art and music theory, etc.? I'm thinking of something like St Mark's Bookshop in New York (maybe I'm being too optimistic?).

Thanks in advance!

london is not known for it's bookshops. there is only one alternative bookshop in the whole city. its called compendium books and it closed years ago. forbidden planet used to have a reasonably interesting selection, but no longer. charing cross road has a variety of specialist bookshop and the gargantuan Foyles where oliver craner works, but nothing that really hits the spot.

couldn't agree more with luka here. For a city the size of London the state of the bookshops is a disgrace.
The LRB bookshop in Bury place is good, though maybe not specifically for the areas you are interested in.

i guess the ICA, Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Whitechapel gallery all have good bookshops too, to be fair.

i'll second church st stoke newington. but get in quick because the rent has tripled in that area recently. the latest casualty is totem records. you may still be able to get some bargains there before it closes up for good - follow the flocks of dealers like vultures.

back on topic: just off old street, above the foundry..
Bookartbookshop 17 Pitfield St. London N1 6HB
more artists books and editions than theory, and very very small, but a treat and worth mentioning.

these two popped up in my websearch for bookartbookshop:
Index Books Peter Gidal 28 1/2 Lansdown Crescent London W11 2NS
William English 48 Galway House Radnor St. London EC1V 3SL
do they mean anything to anyone?

The only place you can get Polish books in London is way out in Shepherds Bush (IIRC), so more of that, central, would be nice. Kind of a niche market though.

A bookshop near Senate House that stocked all the books that I go in there to read but that are permanently out on loan to undergrads - that would be really nice.
