Sent this to Alex at the BackAgain Site:

Hi there,

I wrongly sent this to Haiko, I understand YOU are the NDW expert!!!

I'm a British journalist/writer/enthusiast.

I ran a website called WOEBOT, and now I run a forum called dissensus.
Among other things I write for The Wire.

I've been getting very into NDW over the past couple of years. Here's
what I've collected

• DAF 1st and Die Kleinen
• Pyrolator In/Aus
• Palais Schaumberg 1st
• Holger Hiller
• Abwarts
• Einsturzende Neubauten
• De Plan Geri/Norm
• Liasons Dangereuses
• Verschwende Deine Jugend: Punk und New Wave in Deutschland 1977-83
Comp
• Berlin 80 Comp
• Jochim Witt Edelweiss
• Les Vampyrettes

I'm thinking I'll check out the:
Als Die Partisanen Kamen compilation (no idea where to find a copy
though?)

Can you recommend me some things you think I might like? (I LOVE all
of the above....) It'd be a real favour.

If you're interested in trading I can send you some Grime, UK
Jungle/Hardcore. AvantGarde Music, Reggae, I have lots of stuff.

Anyway, get back to me. I love your website. Danke schon.

best
Matthew (London)

and i got this really fantastic reply back:

thanx for your mail and sorry fort he long delay in answering to it...I
have been on holiday some time.

You are right, I am very into NDW (which means nothing else than "German
New Wave" in fact).

It seems, that you are mostly interested in the less commercial

You should try to get the NDW Discography (book) by Ralf Strache and Kai
Eisenbläztter.
Try this emails of the authors:

The book features nearly all NDW releases ever. It´s in German language,
but the discography data is the best, you can get anywhere!

Grauzone you can pick things up by quite easily on ebay. "Eisbar" has to be the one track by them that has been played extensively (nice 12" too) by optimo and the likes.

Krupps I have a few bits by - of the others I don't recognise too much off the top of my head. Have you picked up any of the Teutonik Disaster albums, Matt? They may be quite a nice reference point for you on this type of stuff.

*edit* - in searching for a link, it linked to some website called www.woebot.com - consider my little advice useless!

I second Neonbabies. Their first record ranks just behind Slits and Raincoats, ahead of just about every other female-lead "arty" post-punk band. The second one is quite good, too--just got it this week.

I'm not holding my breath for a CD reissue.

cheers Woe.

Do you still think Les Vampyrettes did "the best record ever"?
seem to recall reading something along those lines on your defunkt blog.
It is seriously good stuff. Wonder how many copies were sold?

Of the websites listed purefreude.de and die-todliche-doris.de
have complete MP3s for download.

gott in himmel, etc

i have a thing by barchen und die milchbubies! its v good

sure I remember someone being mean here about the DJ Hell NDW comp- anyway, ignore that, it's icy, glassy proto-techno stuff for the most part and rivals 'verschwende' for me, so there.

didn't mean to slate it outright - there's some wicked tracks on there, it's just that it's a bit too skewed towards the 'cold-wave' / proto-ebm stuff than i'd like (in keeping with the gigolo esthetic).

it's definitely worth picking up, but i still reckon that 'verschwende...' is a better comp overall, and definitely a better starting point.

Yeah I love it. Its pure gabba. The Monoton LP may have taken its crown however as THEE best.

I'm no NDW expert but didn't see the recent Gomma Records retrospective compilation 'Teutonik Disaster' (vol. 1&2) listed anywhere.

they're okay those gomma comps. a few really great tracks.

also the international gigolo comp probably deserves a mention too. what was it called? (digging through vinyl)

perhaps not on the same plateaux as the Verschwende Deine Jugend and Als Die Partisan Kamen comps???

sometimes
i got this album by palais schaumburg in the shop the other day and i was fucking really impressed - the band is basically a post punk band with world music inflections and dubiness and a kind of grey attempt at joy through it all - but check out the people in the band - moritz von oswald on vibes and thomas feldmann as well as stefan bauer the jazz musician, it all starts to click together , the same sort of people in germany were the same sort of people to kick start areas of the uk dance scene.
Also sonic groove records are re-releasing 12"s of new deutch stuff - pankow and click click are the first releases on a dedicated imprint called sonic groove experiment.
they're both wicked .

a wonderful wooden reason
Picked up an album by Rotzkotz last year - Lebensfroh + Farbenfroh (on No Fun Records) - because the cover was great, and it was German, from 1981, and had synths and a picture of the bearded 'Toningenieur' on the back as well as the group. It's pretty good! Still quite punky - seems they'd been around for a while and 'went' Neu Wave synthtastic on this record (according to backagain.de). It isn't far-out / weird / ultracool NDW - more lively, daft and inventive with a little teutonic punk agro.

I'm sure they'll be roundly slagged by the real connoisseurs here, but I like it cos I found cheap and I can't afford all those amazing reissues. :(
