I was walking around Central Park yesterday and totally accidentally stumbled onto the free M.I.A. concert. Anyone else was there?
It was pretty interesting in that it was exactly the kind of stuff this board champions (aside from Grime).
First was some Desi DJ playing Bhangra and Dancehall (east to west Indies) and a little hip hop and closed off with a Baile Funk track (with a cryptic "that's what they told me to do" comment before she walked off). Then it was Mr. Vegas with an energetic set of dancehall classics and his own tunes. The crowd knew every song and sang along. Then it was Diplo ripping shit up with Hip Hop, r'n'b, electro, a big chunk of "Favela on Blast" (after the first track he got on the mic to ask if we like this kind of music. After some scattered confirmations he proceeded) and dancehall naturally. Then it was M.I.A. I have to confess here that I haven't really heard any of her stuff aside from "Galang" but does every one of her songs use a borrowed beat? I heard "loose lips", dead prez "bigger than hiphop" and a few other things I can't recall anymore from all over the map. The crowd definitely came to see her because nearly EVERYONE was singing along and she didn't even have to work very hard to get them hyped.
Very mixed crowd: carribeans, latinos, asians, indians, whites. It seemed very young. Almost noone older than early-mid 20's and loads of teenagers.
Near the end she asked if anyone was from Baltimore right before a track using a Baltimore club beat, I had to represent, of course, even if I have nothing to do with Club music.
