professional soundcard recommendations?

i don't know if people can help me out with this, but i want to buy a good soundcard for music production with about 8 ins and outs within the range of 300-400 quid.

so far, i've been using an old usb emagic box which is ok for taking out and about, but the latency is terrible over usb plus with a lot of apps, i can output audio but not record simultaneously which is a pain.

a breakout box would be useful but not essential - more into reducing the latency and sound quality. what cards have you used which you'd recommend?

thanks

can anyone recommend a decent laptop soundcard capable of recording 24bit stereo?

i was thinking about the m-audio transit, but the reviews have been mixed on amazon

sorry should have said earlier.

basically i need something really simple for as little money as possible. all it needs to have is 24bit stereo in & outs (just line in, no pre-amps necessary) and work reliably with windows vista

i've been looking at these products (all for under a £100) but i don't know anything about them. i'm a bit concerned about the quality of these products.
