hip-hop, where to begin?

As a newbie to this forum I can see that there are some things I'm going to need to learn a whole lot more about. I've already ordered a book on Badiou so that just leaves hip-hop. ;)

Can anyone suggest ONE track I should listen to to get me started....

I'm hoping that a few of you will contribute and I'll have a week's listening before too long.

Many thanks.

just dive in dude, start checking out some radio shows and shit. i dunno, maybe 1xtra, you can probably link up some pirates playing hip-hop in hackney as well.

A track to introduce you to hiphop, wow how have you managed to avoid it till now?

For starters I’d choose something like

Nas ‘NY state of mind’

Erik B and Rakim ‘follow the leader’

Schooly D ‘PSK what does it mean’

Jay Z ‘The takeover’

baboon2004

Darned cockwombles.
Geto Boys - Mind Playin' Tricks On Me - just to see what hip hop can be when it hits the heights

or Nas - Life's a Bitch, for an example of supreme MC-ing

Better than I could have possibly hoped for, keep em' coming I'm enjoying this.

Highlight's so far, gotta be GZA Genius, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, & Common and Nas.

despite the anti-conscious/backpacker backlash, mos def, common and talib were all good at one point - check out common's single resurrection (the large professor remixes were good too), the black star song respiration (talib, common and mos are all on that one) and mos def's black on both sides album. ignore all talib kweli/reflection eternal albums as they have more or less all been shite.

some basics you should check out -
grandmaster flash and the furious five - the message
run dmc - sucker mcs
boogie down productions - south bronx
eric b and rakim - follow the leader
big daddy kane - set it off
kool g rap - poison
de la soul - jenifa taught me
nwa/eazy e - dopeman
ice cube - the product
public enemy - public enemy number one

i would say for a nice taste of ther hip hop format from 84-94, get these LP's

acknowledged classics:

wu tang clan- enter 36 chambers
Public Enemy- Nation of Millions (although i prefer "fear of a black planet")
de la soul- 3 feet high and rising
eric b and rakim- paid in full
EPMD- strictly business
biggie- ready to die
nwa- straight outta compton
step into the arena- gangstarr
ultramagnetic- critical beatdown
dr dre- the chronic
raising hell- run dmc
whodini- escape
just ice- back to the old school

personal favs:

black moon- enta da stage
brand nubian- in god we trust
mathod man- tical
scarface- the diary
ice cube- the predator
stetsasonic- in full gear

as for 12"s... oh boy, that's a can of worms...

Highlight's so far

how you pickin' your highlights? I thought you didn't know nothin' 'bout hiphop? or is you testing dissensians on their legitimacy? is you 'avin a laugh?

people hate on indie rap but Company Flow's FunCrusher Plus is ill. and Lif's Enter the Collosus packs it in too.

whatever you do, ignore the Outkast recommendation.

no, dont ignore the outkast recommendation ;) - at least get their first two albums - both are maybe their best. get the goodie mob's first album too.

some essential southern albums off the top of my head -
geto boys - we cant be stopped
scarface - mr scarface is back
juvenille - 400 degreez
lil jon - put your hood up (or is it throw your hood up?) and kings of crunk
master p - geto d
mystikal - geto fabulous
three 6 mafia - when the smoke clears
lil wayne - the block is hot
big tymers - i got that work

for an extra special journey through the most gutter ignorant rap - check out the j-zone compilation 'ignant vol 1' - its great!
