How Big is the UK Old-School Rave/Breakbeat Hardcore Scene?

Beast of Burden
Curious to know. Judging from remarks in John Bitumen's "Happy Hardcore" thread, there are still a lot of pirate stations that play classic jungle and hardcore??? And I've head that in the North of England many of the clubs that used to play Northern Soul have now changed over to playing Old School Rave. What are the crowds like at these events? And drug use? Also, how does record shopping work in the UK? Are the second-hand shops flooded with classic rave and jungle 12"s, much as NY second-hand record shops still carry lots of old school hip hop and early NY/Chicago house? . . . . Again, curious to hear. And for future reference, what are the best second-hand shops in London for finding 1990/94 material?

those big raindance raves that happen semi-regularly are massive aren't they?

i went to an oldskool hardcore night once. it was excellent fun. loads of 14 year old kids in their first flush of e-love. a really exciting, joyous and innocent atmosphere.

very, very rarely pick up any ardcore on the pirates round here, but there's still a few jungle stations...
right, i'm off to listen to a Bonkers boxset...

oh, + by the way, the big HMV on oxford street in london is bizarrely (for a big chain shop) excellent as far as hardcore + early jungle vinyl goes.
music and video exchange in notting hill is also good for that stuff, i've been told.

really simon? will have to get down there, as i've been shelling out big bucks for tunes from ebay, gemm and the like.

the last one i picked up was guy called gerald "all night baby" after hearing it on one of mr woebots mixes!

btw, i'm going to be playing an old skool hardcore set, albiet a short one, at a forthcoming outlet party on the 10th december in london if anyones interested. i'll post up more details closer to the time!

pay a tenner, get on oxford tube and go to avid in oxford- downstairs is wicked.

Darned cockwombles.
Can't pick up any ardkore pirates where I am (otherwise, I'd be locked on), but I did go to a Raindance event earlier this year. Soundsystem wasn't the best, it must be said, and I was drunk and tired by the time I got there, but hearing '2 Bad Mice Take U' on the dancefloor was worth the entry fee alone. Apart from that, several stalls selling dummies and glowsticks, pretty good atmosphere but not quite that 'rave madness' that I've experienced at a few jungle events.

So, in sum, hit and miss for the night itself, but can't fault the music.

I haven't checked in our rave section for quite a while, actually, I must have a look. I will report back on whether it's worth a look!

Dance music finder here in Birmingham ( town center) had a old 'ardcore room last time i checked, lots of re-presses and raritys, and it was gathering dust..

the oxford street hmv does have a few on the wall. some of the old stuff has been steadily reissued over the past few yearses. picked up stuff like yolk here.

m and v is, i'm afraid picked dry.

and as for avid in oxford, well yeah they do have ALOT of stuff, and i mean LOADS. but its rare you find something truly great in there.

:-( doom and gloom i'm afraid.

the BEST place in london is definitely haggle vinyl on the essex road. bizarrely this place is always stocked to the gills with stuff, though its been a bit quieter in the past few years. if anyone is seriously curious i can furnish them with the number of my dealer, who i met running a stall in camden market (in the electric ballroom) thats where i found my (and simon's) copies of foul play volume one....

reckless on Berwick have got loads of jungle/hardcore classics up on the wall at the moment.
you need to go armed with some trade or be prepared to shell out quite a bit as per the norm these days.

you do have to spend ages digging, but i normally come out with at least one thing i want to run home and listen to.

it is over priced though.

Choonz Records in Leeds had a decent (that is, rare and expensive) old skool section last time I went - which was a few years back, mind. I don't know how up-to-date their website is but it's at:
