Capital is not to be questioned
Well, that's certainly a fine example of capitalist inevitabilism. Not only, "capitalism exists, therefore everything that happens is a result of capitalism," the article gives us the full blown article with the next step to, "therefore you must be thankful to capitalism." Like a kind of brain-dead amor fati.
I also like the argument by assertion. The connections drawn by the musicians mentioned between pop music and left-wing politics are never engages with: they are simply asserted to be "incohate" or "impossible to justify intellectually." "Marsh can’t sensibly reconcile the liberty whose praises he sings with the kind of state necessary to forge the classless egalitarianism that he wants," the article says, and because Reason Magazine says it, it must be true.
All of which builds up to the glorious conclusion: it's incoherent to be a communist pop star, because the meaning of music is constructed by the purchaser, and the buyers aren't communists. Your opinions are what the people with money say they are. "Free minds, free markets," indeed.
