modern Arabic and other fusion

just bought the Essential Rai and several other box-sets vaguely in the Arabesque and Arabica, Arabic Beats vein... hoping that there are atleast a handful of amazing tracks in the whole pile ---- and not too much Global Underground type wank.

does anyone have any Asian electronica fusion type shit they down with right now? Indian or Egyptian or Algerian or Javanese or whatever. please don't say Buddha Bar.

I'm totally in love with "When I Close My Eyes" ) (free MP3)
by Natacha Atlas from http://www.beggars.com/us/natachaatlas/
a video (Real) of the same track+some from
http://www.mantrarecordings.com/natachaatlas/biog.html

It might be westernised wank (she became a member of the Trans Underground)
in your eyes and I have no idea if it's played at the Buddha Bars around, don't care.
On this one track I think she pulls it off (but her rap-fusion tracks sounds well dodgy).

There's bound to be purer and even better stuff out there than this (no mudhut debate please). Anyone?

you know, Natasha Atlas is an artist I have gone back and forth with so many times... first time I heard her was on some Jah Wobble albums from the early 80s, and loved her immediately. but fast forward to 2003 and I heard that "Something Dangerous" album and was very dissapointed with how cheesy it sounded, and kind of wrote her off for a while.

until recently I heard some random tracks and some 90s albums by her and she's on my good side again...

I'm actually downloading her entire discography from this site (track by track)

there are a few sites where you can download an absolutely mind-bogglingly wide selection of arabic music:
mp3s: http://mazikana.com or

forums like:
http://forum.demna.com is really good
http://uae4mp3.com (in عربي !! ;) ) has a lot of exclusives & live numbers
http://www.music.kuwait.com looks nice also, in arabic & english

there doesn't seem to be too much worries about (c) control, which i suppose means that artists are losing out if so much of their work is so freely available,

i have so far successfully avoided exposing myself to natascha atlas since about WOMAD94 i think...

unrelated note, is this more typically exaggerated and irresponsible journalism?

yeah

i dont know whether i really get 'fusion' anyway, what i mean is:
you can say that there is a lot of 'western' influences (& electronics) in a lot of arabic pop, is that fusion?

I'm not sure as to the definition of fusion either...

the Rolling Stones song "Paint it Black" has an unmistakable mid east melodie... probably inspired from when Brian Gyson invited them to Morroco.
but I doubt anyone has ever thought of that as "fusion"...

India is not getting into fusion but rather remixes of old songs and its massive.

Take a bollywood singer, remix the vocals with some cheesy bhangra or house beat and you've got yourself a number1 hit out there.

for arabic - Khaled...all the fuckin way.

and loads of hiphop beats with "guest appearances" by US rappers... I've heard Lil' Jon's signature yelps on a NUMBER of bhangra and desi remixes.

I like it when Beanie Man makes apperances... I know of atleast 2 Indian versions of "dude"

I'm still fantasizing about a perfect modern Arabic music... traditional beauty with ILL beats and bass... a sinister post-industrial Rai... or ultra futuristic Dubsteppy Egyptian dance music with heavily treated ghost vocals... WHY DOES THIS NOT EXIST I ask you WHY?????

there are pockets of brilliance but for some reason ethnic music as stated above gets dumped in compilations so artists dont really emerge as individual entities, ya see me?

your mistaking the whole u.s hiphop thing with straight up bollywood remixes...two different things. yes of course all those hiphop remixes are massive in india, and what spurned these other remixes to come through...but in my humble opinion you can go so much deeper and more interesting thru the dubstep, electronica, dnb, fusion scenes...

Have heard some good Gnawan (mix of african/arabic influences) with modern western takes, mostly drum'n'bass that I really like
Gnawa Njoum - Experience No Fridge
Gnawa Impulse - Living Remix
Gnawa Diffusion, odd trax by them
that traditional gnawan music sounds like the roots of the blues on some key level, helps a lot I suspect.

On an ambient Big Chill angle, Mercan Dede has done some absolutely gorgeous trax, as have Natacha Atlas and Transglobal U nderground both chilled and uptempo, even though I'd agree about a lot of TU, and to a lesser exrent Natacha Atlas that it can get pretty cheesy, and not good cheesy at that. Not unlike a lot of hippy digi-dub really, and I say that as an old skool hippy.

Also heard a really interesting track by the 'ethnu jazz project gnawa voodoo' recently which was well all right.

Then of course there is Duoud :), though still the odd trcak has a bad cheese vibe, but minimal to my ears.

Another name I've yet to check out is U-Cef, heard one track by him called The Moorish matador which I well like

Paris, french forums and google translate has to be the way forward on this route I reckon for the real underground stuff, and Stern's of course :)
It frustrates me, because just getting this list together took a lot of time, and I know there's load of other good stuff out there, proper fusion, not just one slapped on top of the other, heard some absolutely wicked rai/mixed with hip-hop stuff on a docu about 4 years ago and still haven't been able to track any down yet.

And re checking out, forgot to add Oojami, and of course going back in time the Lebanese mountain singer track off of My Life In The Bush of Ghosts which I love and always gets a reaction when played out, indeed heard Mixmaster Morris play it out a couple of months ago

Going much further east there's always been loads more around that I've found, starting with Massive Attack and Mustt Mustt with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, badmarsh and Shri have done some wicked stuff, loads of names really.

Re dubstep and egyptian, that would be well interesting if done proper, I've had a yearning for a while now for Serbian stuff with dubstep, Serbian songs have to have more pain expressed in them than any other music I've heard, but I'm sure that's a regional thing, and haven't heard any Croatian stuff and very little macedonian to know, to mix that in with dubstep would be pretty strong stuff.

The overseas producers I've heard have had very little of their culture showing to my ears which I find sad, ah well. I have a strong affinity for northern brazilian music and would love to hear that in dubstep, well Pinch used a small bit of berimbau in Alien Tongue, and Distances Nomad even more,

Of course within dubstep there have been loads of heavily eastern influenced tracks.

I just got U-Cef album. a couple of quality tracks like the standout "Aalash Kwawna" - tripped out political hiphop with vocals in arabic and english - discontent and unrest in Marrakech with copious amounts of hash. the rest is still good, alternating between mid-tempo jungle and triphop with sampled flutes or ouds, though a bit forgettable... promising direction though.

any links to these French forums you mention?

when you track down the hiphop Rai let us know!
