View Full Version : Hot Old Skool Babes

OK please forgive me for the slightly chauvinistic tone.

Was thinking recently how I don't find the Andy McDowell of "Groundhog Day" (unimpeachable film, surely) as hot as I used to.

got to musing about the perennial nature of beauty, how one generations notion differs from anothers.

then i thought...hey, what about the impossibly hot ladeez of the past!

heres two:

this cuts across sexes, obviously- these men were once swooned over as meatheads like brad pitt is nowadays (finding out a girl fancies him or jude law is like finding out one of your friends has lara croft or abi titmuss posters, i.e evidence of idiocy

http://www.leninimports.com/ivornlodger1.jpg

http://www.leninimports.com/buster.jpg

something went horribly wrong with the attractiveness of the celebrated, presumably sometime in the 1980s...would be impossible to look like buster keaton or bacall or marlene d or ivor novello now- viz scarlett johansson's grim attempts to look 'glam'

This conversation turns up a lot lately- why don't/can't women look like they used to (hair-wise, figure-wise, dress-wise, eyebrow-wise, etc.)? Not just glam types either, but people's grandma in old photos, etc.

Even Highsmith from not that long ago:

It's puzzling

I'm sure part of it is a reaction against celebrity culture today, not least the preferred body shape and vacancy of sex symbols.

Also perhaps some nostalgia for when we were younger and spent afternoons watching re-runs of 60s tv shows (which is arguably when a lot of ideas about what is attractive were imprinted on us?)

Mebbe there is also a hauntological angle here? Is it the distance and (mis)memories involved, and also the different quality of the lighting/inks/styles?

there might have to be a bit of periodisation involved - some of the sixties looks still seem a bit possible to replicate - even if it gets reduced to long straight hair, or twiggy-style short cuts, heavy kohl, op-art dresses etc.

http://www.gi-jive-ball.com/Style_21.jpg

http://www.hairarchives.com/private/archive2/40s1/40s3.jpg

It's 40s hair I never see any more!

not to mention vintage porn-type arses, that rich port-soaked warble of war-time BBC announcers, the brillo-side parting of young men, the pinched-waists of 1950s housewives, natty dressing of any kind, proper hats, etc. etc. etc....

one of the reasons -- on top of the fashion, style and the like, different posing and public selfpresentation conventions -- surely has to be the advances in film, foto and video technology on one hand (probably more important) and improved make-up, hair gel on the other.

Incidentally I find Andy McDowell grotesquely unattractive, especially in those smug loreal adverts, but generally in any situation in which she is unfortunately encountered.

I'm sure this will come as a blow to both woebot and ms mcdowell.

if you come to LA I can introduce you to a few of them :)

So does that make you a "designer pimp" or a "pimpin' designer"? (I finally checked out your site... very humbling... real clients... explanations of the concepts behind your designs... I like your work too) Oh, and yes, your friend is cute. What is it about straight fringes? Been burned by this one many a time... once, years ago in one of my post-break-up desperado phases, I met a really cute girl with a betty page cut in a dodgy gold coast nightclub. I have to admit it was her hair in particular that attracted me. Anyways, we danced, we drank, we talked, we took a romantic stroll along the beach, and it turned out she was WEARING A WIG!! And no... we didn't go home together... and (sigh) no... it wasn't because of the wig.

oh... hang on... I thought this was the "embarrasing stories you're going to regret posting tomorrow" thread.

Did anyone see Steve McQueen's (the artist ) film installation titled "Charlotte", where he films (in painful detail) his finger poking and caressing her aged eye?

Ava Gardner, hellraiser extraordinaire - I've got Lee Server's bio on Mitchum
and the reviews have been good on his Ava Gardner one as well -
http://www.literaryreview.co.uk/McLynn_04_06.html

Ava loved to shock people with crude outbursts and crude deeds. Among the latter, her favourite exploit was urinating in public in hotel lobbies (a taste she shared with other female performers, like Edith Piaf and Rachel Roberts).
Among the former, her best-known bon mot came when a reporter asked her what she saw in a 119-pound weakling like Sinatra. Referring to the crooner's notorious physical endowment, she coolly replied: 'Well, I'll tell you - nineteen pounds is cock.'

David Hemmings is really great...if I had photoshop maybe I could deduce what you look like by mixing the three pictures. j/k

But isn't it always kind of a left-handed compliment when people tell you that you look like someone?

Even if it sounds sincere, I always wonder what they truly mean by it.

When I was in Germany, someone told me I looked like Julianne Moore. Which I definitely don't think is true at all. I have dark hair and no freckles, anyway.

Someone else told me I look Gwenyth Paltrow, which would be great, but is sadly untrue. Then they clarified and said, no you just talk like her and have similar mannerism. I've always found her kind of annoying, so I assumed this meant "your voice is annoying."

But isn't it always kind of a left-handed compliment when people tell you that you look like someone?
I think so. Well in general it's normally misguided and based on lazy stand out factors - having messy blond hair does not mean I look like BoJo - but when it's accurate I think it probably is depressing, especially if it's someone who is famously good looking and what they basically mean is, you look like them but without the spark that makes them handsome.

Someone else told me I look Gwenyth Paltrow, which would be great, but is sadly untrue. Then they clarified and said, no you just talk like her and have similar mannerism. I've always found her kind of annoying, so I assumed this meant "your voice is annoying."

not necessarily. for instance i am naturally an introverted person, but have trained myself to become extroverted through the years. sometimes the bit naive and very sensitive person even shows through the artificial thick skin. friends laugh when i say that i'm actually pretty shy, but it's true. and if you know me you'd know i'm pretty comfortable (maybe too comfortable) in my own skin...

I remember realizing that what people meant when they said "stunning" could be quite literal, the first time I saw one of her movies...she makes gigantic breasts look pretty instead of grotesque, which in my mind is rare.

I've seen Jason Schwartzman like 20 trillion times and he always looks so douchey. Re Apple that's what years of untreated anorexia (and probably lots of drugs, I don't know) will do for you.

I always try to tell guys which actresses are anorexic and they never believe me. Then sure enough within a year or two they're on death's door and in "rehab" for anorexia. I called it for the Olsen Twins when they were 15, Lara Flynn Boyle, Lindsay Lohan, and the latest one Kate Bosworth. Really, I would have guessed that she was taller than that, must just have a big screen presence I suppose.

"I can't recall seeing her in anything other than that Tarantino one she was in, but yeah, she's definitely hot in that."
Well loads of blaxploitation films as well as The Big Bird Cage which is more of a women-in-prisonsploitation thing (as is its predecessor The Big Doll House which I haven't seen).also a gladiatorsploitation one whose name escapes me. I think that was an early one as she plays second billing.

Terry, a social-climbing young woman accidently gets caught up in the activities of two revolutionaries, Bloossom and Django, and finds herself in a concentration camp for women. In the center of the camp is a towering wooden machine ("The Big Bird Cage") in which the woman risk their lives processing sugar as the evil warden looks on. The prisoners are subjected to sadistic cruelty from the guards and fellow prisoners, and all atempts at escape are delt with pernamently. Terry's only hope for escape lies in Blossom and her revolutionary allies.
Also a gladiatorsploitation one, the name of which escapes me (turns out it's The Arena). I think that was an early one as she plays second billing.

I like the implication in that post that all tall women are domineering dominatrices who specialize in strap-on play. But, you know, it's not that I'm saying all women should be submissive, they should all just be smaller than me (which means not domineering, apparently) so I can dominate them so they won't seem scary and masculine.

Yeah, not trying to pick on Zhao, I notice this in a lot of htrsxls. I mean, I know the "scene" can be ultra-lame, but it never ceases to amaze me what kind of weird cartoonish version of BDSM most people have in their heads, always so so far from what it's actually like--they usually think that doms are "domineering" and mean, and that S&M is always based on really melodramatic "role play", even though role play is relatively rare and always secondary (believe or not, some people are just oriented that way, they don't need to pretend or playact). It's like for htrsxls they only way they can imagine "domination" happening is with someone penetrating someone else, so a female dom always straps one on. (Personally I think props of any kind are completely unnecessary and superfluous if the dom is truly skilled.)

It's also funny how scary it all seems to them even though it's obvious that most of them have a power-play component to their own sexuality.

Anyway, Claudette Colbert is pretty hot, so is she:

nah you are more like this chick in me and Sloane's favorite flick:

http://www.deep-focus.com/flicker/possession.jpg

but (edit: maybe) not QUITE as crazy ;)

Didn’t know Possession had such a following round here! I absolutely love it too! Especially how it transmogrifies from the most true-to-reality jealousy drama ever (some people think they overact, but I find the acting 100% plausible) into a slash movie. And, YES, Adjani is stunning! The clip below is case in point.

I once slept with a woman who's only half an inch or so shorter than me, and I'm a shade over 6'1"...women taller than me are fairly few and far between. There's a woman who must be 6'4" or thereabouts who works at my old university, it was hard not to do a bit of a double take every time I saw her.

Most of my guy friends love tall women, including my bf. When I worked for a couple of months in SoHo, it was like being in tall women model heaven. The thing about tall women is they're usually slender or have small frames, so I don't think tall women are necessarily unfeminine-looking. I also have no idea how you can deduce that someone is a "control freak" by looking at their face or watching them act in a film.

I can see how it would be weird at 5'7" (which is how tall I am) to be with someone who was exceptionally tall, like 6'5" or taller, doesn't matter if you're male or female. But a matter of an inch or two? Not an issue.

nomadthethird
17-12-2008, 10:36 PM
My gf is 5'2"and bosses me (I'm 5'7") around like nobody's business.

Most women dom a boyfriend without even trying and without him even noticing. It's subtle. The helpless act comes in handy.

For sure - and who is to say that there might not come along that six foot five girl that I like?
As this has become a kind of self-disclosure thread I will say that I am about five ten and so is my girlfriend - we argue about who is tallest but basically it's me unless she's in heels which I count as cheating.

It's a very shouty film and I know a lot of people who would hate it but my guess is it's like marmite - although I don't know why I say that as I don't actually know anyone who hates it, I just know people that I assume would.

As this has become a kind of self-disclosure thread

Wasn't it begun as a self-disclosure thread? What could be more personal than revealing which old school babes you find hot? ;)

I always figured part of the appeal of heels was based on levelling the playing field a little and bringing women and men face-to-face.

I used to know a couple who were something like five foot nothing and six foot six (that's F and M respectively, of course - though the other way around would have been cool), and they seemed perfectly happy about it. At any rate, I never heard her yell "Stop being so fucking tall!" at him, so I assume they were happy.

Hardly an 'old-skool babe', but rather, a babe in a decidedly old-skool milieu: the woman (presumably an actress/singer in the production) in the poster for Cosi Fan Tutti on at the ENO at the moment.

http://www.eno.org/src/cosi1-big.jpg

The poster for it on the tube has that image but it seems a lot darker, which works better.

There's more eroticism in that eyebrow and those lips than in all the tits-n-ass in the world. I know this because of SCIENCE.

Spotted in Argos today (of all places). Woman around 30 dressed like Joan in MadMen, vintage tight-fitting dress, strawberry blonde hair is one of these knots pointing upwards and looking like she just walked off a film set. Never seen anyone dressed like her (even in London, but then I do not hang around that vintage bar place in SoHo where you sometimes see men dressed like Kid Creole).

Shame I missed this thread..some great images. Can't help truly admiring 'babes' from 40s to 60s (mostly, to try and focus a bit) and wondering about what constitutes 'beauty' when looking at women considered 'hot' in 80s flicks and thinking 'nah' (the hair! the shoulder pads! the make-up! no, no, no). Whereas any 'hot' woman from the eras I've mentioned just looks superb (as many of you have demonstrated).

No idea about today not being an avid follower of modern film (old fart, I know). - but the ones I see who may be beautiful are often busting out all over the shop thus negating aspects I treasure such as sophistication and subtlety - admittedly these were imposed by censorship in days of old, thus the aesthetic I treasure evolved (I'm no fan of the big, blonde and busty types of the 50s either).

To me there's a beauty in, say, Veronica Lake, that can't easily be defined...a kind of mystique, if you like. Anna K as presented by that pretentious bastard/lover JLG I could watch forever...not lustily...just...(rendered speechless).

Someone mentioned clothes? (did they?). Everyone looks a mess today - fact. Men and women - no class...bus it down Oxford Street from the top deck and look for style that isn't lazy street 'chic' or plain boring.

I'm so unhip (?) I think the clothes maketh the movie stars of old as much as their faces/figures - whereas today's vulgarians seem to have to show a lot more, have bigger lips'n'tits...yawn.

We have that here, too, mostly in suburban or rural areas.

I think you should have a haircut that matches the shape of your face, from a technical aestheticianly perspective. If you have a round or oval face, short hair can look bad.

But no, I hate that stupid idea that women, as soon as they hit 40, and/or have kids, which ever comes first, that they should throw in the towel and get a grandma haircut and elastic waist pants. If that's all you have energy for, fine. But it's a very sexist thing, the idea that women aren't attractive once they have kids or pass a certain age, and that if they try to be it's a crime against fashion or humanity or whatever. Stupid.

But of course, I'll hear middle age women talking about how nobody finds older women attractive, but they've clearly thrown in the towel and gone with the "mom jeans" and such. Men are easy. All it takes is a bare minimum of upkeep and they'll think you're hot. Raquel Welch is still in commercials ffs.

Bulimics love to eat, though, they particularly love to binge eat junk food, then throw it up. The ones I know would eat shit like cheetos and slim jims constantly.

I saw this TV show about this ballet dancer who would only chew food then spit it out. But she'd do this with like an entire box of oreos. She spent hours a night in front of TV chewing then spitting out food. It was pretty intense.

I have wondered in passing if women going for short hair when they reach a certain age (it's usually a bit older than early middle age isn't it) isn't related to a hormonal post-menopause thing. Never heard the notion that they should be doing this out of some sense of appropriateness or decorum, though not saying such an attitude might not exist anywhere. Sometimes young mums go for a temporarily boyish or 'asexual' look when babies are very new, like the biological message is 'don't get any ideas, I'm all about the kids right now.'

Isn't it just a totally practical thing about not wanting to get food and baby gak and stuff in your hair, plus having to go 'ow, ow, please, leave mummy's hair alone, darling' gets a mite tiresome after its 500th repetition to something that thinks pulling mummy's hair and getting a reaction is the bees-knees?

Plus it's easier to tend to if you're, like, gettin 2 hours sleep a night.

I kinda like it when older women get short haircuts, when they're done well they look like the most glam thing ever.

Hmm, I generally really like a fairly heavy touch of eyeliner/eyeshadow/mascara, but it depends very much on how it's done. E.g. classic Liz Taylor - amazing, Twiggy - not so much.

it could be, and style plays a part as well. but what would they mean without two exceptionally beautiful, exceptionally alive, and in the case of uschi, exceptionally intense women? marie-france radiates beauty and charm (see her smile in the interview), while uschi is pure erotic intensity, almost sublime in her destructive potential. i think these qualities shine through in the image.

I love how women's bodies looked in the '60s too, you just don't see women like that any more in films, fashion shoots or whatever. It's a shame.

there are some not unhealthy-looking women in film today, recent bond girls come to mind, or the girl in sleeping beauty, it's not that uncommon. there are also examples of (physically) unattractive women in 60s and 70s images, i think one tends to be forgiving or have a selective memory but they are there as well.

i think the 60s/70s are def my favourite period for actresses. probably a lot to do with how they did their make up too but i love womens hair styles from that era.

In the last two weeks I've developed a massive crush on Liz Fraser from the Carry On films and I'm Alright Jack. Esoteric, Old Skool lusting.

I have no intention of apologising for this. You obviously have an odd mental picture of rugby players, Liz was very pretty in her day, devastating eyes with the classic 50s hourglass. Also, I am that rare type: the congenital leftie who fancies women regardless of political persausion. Sometimes, even, opposites attract. I always enjoy the example of James Carville and Mary Matalin. I would be a classic honeytrap victim.
