All the skag in the world

It occurred to me over the weekend that perhaps the British Army's little expedition to Afghanistan is more about making a grab for the world's richest opium-producing region than anything else. Rather than just policing Helmand province and ensuring that the gear never makes it to the streets, it could be part of a plan to divert that heroin where it's needed. Perhaps to restive Muslim youth everywhere from Basra to Burnley? Britain has a long and glorious history in narcopolitics, and the CIA are widely believed to have tried something similar by flooding US ghettoes with crack in the 80s and 90s.

I'm going to be watching the news for stories of 'soaring heroin use' in troubled parts of the world.
