Haha Interpol, Morrissey, and the Killers beat dizzee rascal! Best hip-hop album of the year is year-old acapellas over 30-year-old rock songs!

edit: the gwen s. ranking surprised me.

Surprised the Gwen record was there at all and the Girls Aloud album wasn't. Three indisputably great (if all essentially hollow) tracks plus an awful lot of filler - it's not as good an album as folk seem to think.

That Franz Ferdinand album is pretty excellent I reckon, as far as it goes- but such a retro release topping the chart is a profoundly depressing experience.

ach, come on: given the state the NME is in now, it's not such a bad list. it's the usual desperate-to-please-everybody tokenistic mix, and it doesn't thrill or excite me, but i've seen far worse.

who compiles that list: writers or readers?

the FF album is good but massively over-rated: that said, "take me out" is my single of the year. the libertines really can fuck off, but they seem to have fooled everybody, and i suppose that for a 17-year-old NME reader they might be quite exciting. i'm delighted to see TVotR in there; the interpol album was OK; i've got a real soft spot for the killers ... ooh look, wilco too ... yeh, ok, it's a list that contains keane but that doesn't negate the fact there are some damn fine albums in there too.

my three favourite albums of 2004 are probably !!!, isis and tv on the radio. one out of three in the NME list seems fair to me. christ, if all three were in i would be worried ;)

The FF album is OK in places, and I can't dispute the greatness of "Darts of Passion" or "Take Me Out," but it's hardly 2004's towering musical statement. The production could have been much better as well (so there's something else they have in common with the first Josef K album).

Now, if "Sorry For Laughing" on Les Disques du Crepuscule had gone straight in the charts at number three in 1980, then we'd be talking revolution!

End of year polls are usually voted by writers; however, I wouldn't be surprised if they then tweak it a little or a not to get the right records in the right place....
