the last confirmed sighting of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker was in the 1940s. However, a 1999 report of a pair of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers in the Pearl River region of Louisiana has led to renewed efforts to find this seemingly extinct bird, most recently by a team of skilled birders and specialists on a 30-day expedition, launched in January 2002. As part of this project, a team from BRP deployed 12 autonomous recording units (ARUs) to record sounds continuously in the Pearl River area. ARUs have tremendous potential for monitoring rare or elusive animals because they can record sounds 24 hours per day, unobtrusively, even in inhospitable habitats and poor weather conditions.

not sure if this'll work, but today I had a moment of madness... went out and bought my first ever camera... and took a photo of this - my moorhen nest - complete with 4 eggs and a (barely visible) newly-hatched chick

I think I've found a new dream job - dressing up as a stealthy floating swamp monster and waiting to spot rare birds.

None of the moorhen chicks survived last year, by the way. :(
Usually 2 or 3 make it, but this year they seemed to have a rough time and never grew strong enough to avoid predators.

Fingers crossed for this year - one of the adults is still hanging around, waiting for a mate to appear.
