that magazine's total shit, but the hawtin CD is pretty good. like the last de9 release, but not as boring and more boshy. the last two tracks in particular are fantastic

i checked it last weekend and Fiddy's doing a column, which is cool that they've finally got some urban content back in there. it must be the new owners.

The CDs have actually been pretty good recently. I've been pleasantly surprised. The mag is still read it in ten minutes fodder though, even if the actual quality of stuff that they review and write about is better than even a year back.

Emap sells Mixmag to entertainment pioneers

Julia Day
Friday November 4, 2005

Emap has sold clubbing magazine Mixmag to Development Hell, the company set up in 2003 by ex-Emap executives David Hepworth, Jerry Perkins, Mark Ellen and Andrew Harrison, who between them were responsible for the launches of titles including Q, Empire, Mojo and Heat.

Mixmag has been acquired for a seven-figure sum by Development Hell, whose flagship title is men's music magazine The Word.

The company was keen to add another entertainment title stable having started with a plan of three magazines over six years. Marcus Rich, the managing director of Emap Metro, said the sale of Mixmag would allow the company to concentrate on its "core brands" Kerrang!, Q and Mojo, which it has also developed into radio stations.

The last edition of Mixmag to be published by Emap will be the December issue on sale November 17.

The Guardian Media Group - parent company of MediaGuardian.co.uk - took a 14% stake in Development Hell in 2004.

If he got the lawyers onto Plasticman for copyright reh reh reh why do I forever see him going under the name Richie Hawtin.

Most annoying.

My first thought on hearing that there was another guying releasing records under the name Plasticman was "Where does this guy get the balls?" My second thought, after hearing one of his records was, "I have to get this." Regardless of what you think of either man's music though, Hawtin has a right to protect the Plastikman name.

Plus there are dozens of guys in electronic music who release music under multiple names. It seems unfair to call Hawtin out for this. Witness:

Goldie = Rufige Kru
DJ Hype = Dopestyle = Kevin Ford = M Double A = Naughty = The Warrior
Dillinja = Capone = Cybotron = Trinity = The Specialist = Basic Influence
Doc Scot = Nasty Habits = Octave One
DJ Zinc = Dope Skillz = Pacific = Tuned air
J Majik = Innervisions = Dexxtrous
Roni Size = Firefox = Mask
DJ Krust = Gang Related
Derrick May = Rhythm is Rhythm = Mayday
Kevin Saunderson = Bad Boys = The, E-Dancer = Esser'ay = K.S. Experience = Kaos = Keynotes = Master Reese = Reese = The Reese Project = Tronikhouse
Juan Atkins = Audio Tech = Channel One = Infiniti = M500 = Magic Juan = Model 500 = Model 600 = Red Parrot = Triple XXX

Is J Magic also Dexxtrous/Dextrous as in "Hot Flame", or is that someone else? I love that tune.

Didn't know there was another Octave One, don't know why he didn't protect his name, but ge didnt' put out much under that name in any event, so it probably just never showed up on anyones radar. Not sure about the dextrous question (pulled that one from discogs - don't actually have any of the plates) - with Dillinja, I always thought that Cybotron was the artist name - could be mistaken, but thought that I had a couple 12s at home with just the name Cybotron on them and I'm sure at least one of them is called called "Cybotron featuring Dillinja" or something to that effect (maybe this was to avoid the exact same issue as the Plastikman/Plasticman dustup as the tracks gained wider release?).

There was another Dextrous that used the name consistently. Released on that label with the lion's head - Riddim Track, was it? Dunno if he did Hot Flame, but if it was Dextrous, it was probably him.

yep im into this cd. a bit down to see mixmag going on about "minimal" and then all their readers going "shut up about minimal it is so BORING" cue a million "chin stroking" cliches. like, i dont want mixmag to go on about it either y know.

but i like the cd.... i confused tho cos theres a tune on there that also appears on lucianos "sci fi hi fi" but i cant work out what the track is. its like a steel drum monster and i need it on 12" stat.

its certain;ly worth getting the mag for the cd. i dont get why you would buy one on ebay without the mag, surtely postage will bump it up to £4 anyway?

the mag is crap tho really, why have they seized on luciano as the kingpin of the scene? have they ever done features on kompakt, mayer, eulberg, traum etc etc etc? there are a million people they could pick out, not sure why luciano is the one. surely villalobos is a bigger story than luciano, drugs, mentalism, epic egghead tunes, etc etc
