The wet Euro-arse fretless slap bass thread

Norwegian Wood
to paraphrase Buick6 deserves a sidethread.

I guess it was around before the 80s -
but it really came to its own (?) with that guy Pino Palladino
in his work with Paul Young and Gary Numan.

Others:
Fashion - "Fabrique"
Annabel Lamb - "Once Bitten"
Level 42 - ugh

and it's still around - got Annette Peacock's "31:31" through the post yesterday
(nice packaging, numbered&signed and all) - and it's full of those basslines.

must go great with soggy chips and vinegar ???

fekk knows - but with Annette Peacock it's not too bad.
It's a sound that quickly dated and still sound dated.

And that's why I was surprised and taken back
by APs new album - I thought no one was going to use that sound again -
it's like seeing someone wearing a Miami Vice suit or legwarmers.

there was a quite good fretless bass player who turned up on a few 4AD releases in the early 90's, and also played with Terry Bickers in Levitation...(in fact, I think he was also in Felt, and I can't believe I'm spacing on his name)...something O'Keefe...

isn't Jaco Pastorius considered the gold standard in fretless bass?...my musician friends all seem to think so...

is there anything more muso than fretless bass?

Annette Peacock

And Ness
interesting to hear you mention Annette Peacock ...
Sounds like this is a new release ?

Lost the thread on her after X Dreams ,
led there by the Mick Ronson connection

And yeah Carlos , Karn polished that fretless on many a tune

pedantic idiot

Honestly I am shocked, Level 42 almost never featured fretless bass.
Mark King was a pure Stanley Clarke impersonator on the slapping/pulling tip.

It is a new release. From what I understand she has gone totally
independent. That CD cover seems to be hand glued and all.
Just one of these things - you go through your collection and
think "is she still around"? I am glad she is.
Samples from 31:31 here

"X Dreams" was actually what lead me into her as well.
Among all the excitement of punk in 76-78
"My Mama Never Taught Me How To Cook" was played on
one of our "pop" shows and I just thought it was great. Still love "X-Dreams"
and something like the title cut on "Sky Skating" is wonderful.

Love her voice and that she's always been an outsider - but a
bit disappointed that she's not taking more risks sonically after so
many years. Her track with Coldcut starts with another 80s throwback - the motorised camera intro.

yes, they're incredibly annoying (actually the whole show is too, but that's another matter).

If you hate the Seinfeld bass, avoid Phish like the plague. All the basswork on their goddamn albums sounds like the Seinfeld theme.

I've been trying and failing to find a gif of the Hitcher from the Mighty Boosh. You love it, you slags!
