QUESTION: What structure of government do you favour?

ANSWER: It is possible that the structure of any government is not all that important, but what is important is that it gives the people what they want; that it is based in justice, is broad-based and effective. That is what we think is important for the country.
SOMALIA: Interview with Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmed, Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) chairman 22 June 2006 (IRIN)

interview with the eloquent chairman of the islamic courts, he goes on to say that the Transitional Govt of Somalia is a sideshow composed of "the same people who were the biggest obstacle [to peace and stability] in the last 16 years" & imposed by non-somalis."We have been entrusted with this task by the people and we don't see anyone that we should hand weapons to. "

Somalia has been portrayed as an anarchist state by a lot of classical political studies, i have a link for one somewhere. so far mixed reports about the islamic courts regime, despite inevitable charaterisations as 'taliban' style govt, they've apparently banned the world cup so they can't be all bad.

don't think it can be labelled as anarchist because it was a classic warlord run state... 'power flows from the barrell of the gun' in mao's words... perhaps anarchist in the typically anti-intellectual sense generally used by the ill-educated...

re. banning the world cup... why? seems a bit harsh... ahmadinejad - presumably not squeamish in the banning department - tried to get women allowed in to football matches

p.s. not suggesting that i disagree with the sheikh or you for that matter... good interview... fingers crossed

mmm... reuters had an articcle yesterday about the shooting of people demanding to watch the world cup semi-final by Islamist militiamen... the Islamic courts have said that there is no ban on watching... they blamed the militiamen for overzealous activity... there was also something about an Ethiopian incursion... eek!

Iran and China - totalitarian states that 'dabble' in capitalism/democracy. Produces better art. Artists have to be even cleverer to make a valid point that is probably 50 years ahead of it's time.
