jungle vs house.......

..........which has more "subgenres"?

it seems that a list of either would be endless, but then, isnt that what messageboards are for?

Depends on what you count as sub-genre, I don't think House has as many minutely defined subgenres as jungle does. Maybe because the scene is less splintered and the fans aren't as nerdy obsessive. House encapsulates a wider variety of sounds. Either way, house "wins" hands down.

me and my friends once had an incredibly nerdy game of seeing how many house subgenres we could name. i think we got to over 30 with ease.

this is how the question came up

im sure that jungle fans are much more likely to subclassify, but house seems to be a bigger umbrella.

i hesitate to start just naming the ones that come off the top of my head, but i may have to soon.....

if we do, anyone want to start keeping count?

what makes a subgenre official?...I was thinking that a compilation release bearing the name of said subgenre would do the trick, but then I can't recall a "Best Microhouse Album In The World...Ever!" or somesuch...who gets to decide?...

there must be "genre trees" in abundance on the internet...or not...it would be interesting to see where the overlap genres sit...(i.e. does UK Garage belong more to House than it does Jungle?)...

To the extent that the ardkore continuum is a response to acid house and detroit techno, the contrast between house and jungle is not exactly symmetrical . . . so perhaps it would be more fun to extend the comparison/subgenre taxonomies to include all "hardcore flavours," as Blackdown puts it?

(P.S. Noel, you've got gabber house in there twice :) )

I think that would cause a paradox in the hardcore continuum ;)

If you stretch out house into hardcore, you get to.....jungle! Or am I misunderstanding?

oh sure, I just meant why stop at one node (jungle), without including garage etc :D

Another one to add (though it's basically speed garage): bassline house
