Don't miss what promises to be one of the MOST UNIQUE CONCERT EVENTS OF 2006 :::
A 40-piece Orchestra playing live on the BEACH OF THE THAMES in central London & outside the TATE MODERN...

Confirmed Performances:
Sunday 30th July, 10pm, on Thames Beach, in front of Festival Hall
Wednesday 2nd Aug, 9pm, by the Thames in front of Tate Modern
[please note previously advertised times for performance on the beach has been changed to the above, due to incorrect low-tide calculations]

Orchestra on The Beach
On the Sunday 30th July @ 10pm a 40 piece Orchestra will be performing on the sandy beach of the Thames- just on front of the Festival Hall. They are called The Ricciotti Ensemble, from Holland, & are touring round the UK for 5 days this summer. They are a 'street orchestra' and take only 4 minutes to set-up & will be playing a very mixed repertoire of old & new music, including pieces especially written for them, and will have special guest soloist, the young dutch opera diva, Maaike Poorthuis. This is going to be a VERY unique & magical event - and certainly the first time a full orchestra has ever played on the Thames Beach in central london. This event is brought to you by nonclassical & Reclaim The Beach (who run the now infamous Beach parties every summer). Please Bring your own drinks.. as we don't have a license... arrive from 9.30pm, when the tide starts to go down! + IT'S FREE.
And if you can't Sunday they are playing in by the Tate Modern on Wednesday 2nd Aug @ 9pm.

-this is for real - it is at 10pm just in front of the festival hall [under the 'festival pier']- tell everyone you know & make sure you are there...

mistersloane

heavy heavy monster sound
It was like being on the Titanic except it felt like the whole world was sinking. It was so surreal that people were giggling very nervously, as if they'd gone mad.

The orchestra are very convivial, all spoken intros and funny moves. High points? Playing a pretty way out piece by a composer called Andrew Dutty I believe and four people positioning themselves around the orchestra and the audience ( as if they were surround sound speakers ) and clacking rocks together, one after another, in a circular pattern. Another point of merit was when two guys started fucking around on the beach, and the whole orchestra stopped, turned and just stared at them until they stopped. Brilliant use of passive-aggression to control a crowd.

They played Haydn, Strauss, a Bollywood medley, and ended up with the Sailor's Beier. Went on for about an hour. Thoroughly good, and weirder than I'd expected, and pretty underground, they could easily have Time-Outed it and got 400 people, as it was there were maybe 60, which was perfect. I most enjoyed hearing an orchestra that close to the trains, the boats etc - the textures the city added were fabulous, and the orchestra took that into account, playing a 'dubbing' piece by a Dutch composer where they improvised the sounds of the city over a kinda freeform 'reggae' beat.

Clever interventionist bunch!

For complicated reasons I ended up not making this. Gutted (and I can't be at the Wednesday one either).
