Irredeemably naff music

So what musicians/genres/eras are so crap, so awful that not even the smuggest pop ironist or broadminded eclectic could find even a glimmer of worth, or even camp value in them?

Do they even exist any more?

Suggestions please.

No overly-personal choices, try and be reasonably objective as far as that's possible.
And no knocking stuff on moral grounds (eg nazi punk, sexist hair metal, etc) we're talking about the medium rather than the message.

i think mistersloane and i already made it pretty clear that's how we feel about scritti politti, so i won't bother revisiting that here :D

Yeah, but Scritti are quite critically well-respected. I'm talking about music that is generally considered rubbish across the board.

Post-grunge.

Third Eye Blind, Matchbox Twenty, 3 Doors Down, Staind, Nickleback, etc.

Fucking detest this stuff. Utterly bland jock-pop for midwestern and southern Americans who like their music "regular" with just a little rockin' edge! *Cringe*

Also, blue collar bar-rock like that "Old Time Rock n Roll" song and "Hot Blooded."

just curious, on what grounds are you hating on Sean Paul?

as far as crap genres are concerned:

adult contemporary
easy listening
new country

might I suggest looking here for lists of awful music.

Mr. Tea

Let's Talk About Ceps
I hate him because he makes awful music. It's just one of those things.

I'd also like to nominate Bloodhound Gang (moronically unfunny 'funny' music for pissed-up frat-boy wankers), System Of A Down (unlistenable pseudo-revolutionary tripe for stoned 16-year-olds), At The Drive-In/Mars Volta ("Oh look, I can pick words at random out of a dictionary! I MUST BE A FUCKING LYRICAL GENIUS!"), Toploader (might not mean much to non-Brits; count yourselves lucky...) and, for reasons I can't be arsed to go into but fall under the general category of 'awful music': So Solid Crew, 50 Cent, any and all commercial Ibiza-type house, Bon Jovi, garage/R'n'B and Coldplay/Snow Patrol/Stereophonics etc. Gah.

Guns 'n Roses can fuck off as well.

Oh, and so can 'emo' bands, just on principle.

And don't get me fucking started on the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Erm, isn't this thread "what genres are beyond any sort of critical approval or reassesment" not "what genres do you hate"?

I think a trawl through the vinyl section of a charity shop - the oldskool" 99p for 3 LPs" type, not these newfangled specialist ones where they actually pick out all the half decent stuff and charge you six quid a throw - would probably turn up a lot of stuff that's really so bad that noone will even pay 20p for it for ironic reasons...

that 6/8 groove of glam gets my goat every time. there's probably something significant in the androgeny of m bolan in pop music etc but that music (even before being stained by gary glitter being discredited) is incredibly depressing. see also: the new wave of 6/8 groove - gold frapp etc.

Crap early 90s indie like Neds Atomic Dustbin, The Wonderstuff, Frank & Walters, Kingmaker etc. A blight on my teenage years. Guitar music so bad that Britpop looked exciting by comparison.

let's mention carter the unstoppable sex machine.
i have never been able to get my head round the fact eno produced james. who i have always confused with the blue aeroplanes.

Seconded. Watching them champion this shite when hip hop and dance were in their pomp made me stop reading the NME (can't have been all bad then, I hear you cry).

(Actually, I had this conversation on a blog once before, and consensus was that F&W were unfairly dumped in with these no-talents - can't say i remember them that well though)

psy trance. recently thanks to our american/australian chums electonic music boards are stuff with retards eulogising about he stuff and its experimental transcendental beauty, i usually end up foaming at the mouth and ranting as usually someone will come in with the argument, 'oh whats so good about techno then' as if psy trance wasnt just a bastardised strain of formulaic techno made by faux spiritual posh hippy tools. its really making me mad at the moment how america is eating up this particular strain and how other stadium trance idiot like tiesto are filling statiums when they ignore some of the greatest ever dance music being created on their doorstep for the last 25 years.
