this is...jungle?

now I know nothing of drum and bass or jungle except for the few songs i've downloaded and incidental things heard here and there. I stumbled on this cheap used compilation with the following tracks plus a mix cd by someone called Tim Millington:

1. Feel the sunshine - Reece, Alex
2. Inner city life - Goldie
3. Tripping on broken beats - Omni Trio
4. Definition of a track - Perfect Combination
5. Smooth note - Jason Mouse
6. Witchcraft - Roni Size
7. Sky high - St. Files
8. T'raenon - Photek
9. Danger - Sub Sequence
10. Mr Kirk's nightmare - 4 Hero
11. Distance - By Pass

12. Musik - LTJ Bukem
13. Western tune - PFM
14. Spectrum - Wax Doctor
15. Jazz creation - Universal Flava
16. I've known rivers - Pine, Courtney
17. Piano tune - Peshay
18. Too unique - Cool Breeze & Stepz Ahead
19. Subtrakt - Tiefenentzerrer
20. Sax lick - Intense
21. Tear down (da whole place) - Dillinja
22. State of mind - Analyse

i'm guessing its probably not what most would think were the top tunes, but is it total crap? is jungle supposed to sound like The White Room with really fast drums? does most of this even qualify as 'jungle'? can i buy anything better? any tracks i should download?

That's all artcore (well, the 2/3 of those tunes I know), smooth 95/96 business (with the exception of Mr. Kirk's Nightmare, which is a bit of an inexplicable choice being much earlier and totally different in sound). That's the stuff from the period when the music was making the transition from 'jungle' to 'drum n'bass'.

I like that early Bukem/Photek stuff, but it's certainly not tearout bizness.

More typical classic jungle (ragga/jump-up/hardstep) anthems (if you're doing the download thing):
Urban Shakedown - Arsonist
Dead Dred - Dred Bass
Shy FX - The Chopper
Renegade - The Terrorist
DJ Zinc - Super Sharp Shooter RMX
Aphrodite & Micky Finn - Badass
Deep Blue - Helicopter
Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows
DJ SS - Black

If you're looking for free shit, you might be interested in this mix of mine, which is full of old stupid drum n' bass (junglist in-joke).

hello mate, its a very wide genre with the music changing wildly in both tempo and style over a short number of years. theres bound to be something that will click.

heres a couple of my old skool jungle mixes online (which to be fair are half jungle / half hardcore - but same difference), see what you think.

You might be interested in these two Debaser mixes. They're full of '94-'96 ragga jungle tunes.

Also, I've been posting some proto-jungle 'darkside' tunes over here: http://autonomicforthepeople.blogspot.com/

yeah man, debaser's north trip mix is one of the best ragga mixes i've ever heard. seriously, i swear i must have listened to it 150 times last year.

John Peel used to make the same joke, I think. He said he liked intelligent d'n'b not because of the music but because the name implied the rest of the stuff must be stupid drum and bass.

It's gonna be the 96 remix - which is piss weak. 4Hero on a jazz tip.
