Rorty Dead on 8 June 2007

Last week, Dr. Richard Rorty died. He was, for me at least, one of the 20th century's most interesting philosophers. He was also a self-proclaimed "raucous secularist." He believed humankind needed to feee itself from dogmatically authoritarian assertions of truth and goodness, as found in all the great religions of history. Needless to say, he was a fovorite of the secular humanists who, at the optimistic end of things, believe that, through some fortuitous conjunction of circumstances, it will be possible to bend the conditions of human life into conformity with some set of prevailing human desires. Rorty believed we could and we should demystify human life and its "ontotheological" metaphors. I don't think he is right, but he has alot of company in his views.

I disagreed with much that Rorty believed, but I liked the way he put things.
