George Michael

And the ladies...

Aaliyah
Madonna
Chaka Khan
Mariah Carey

Probs loads more, I like a certain "sweetness" with a vocalist, it's hard to really pin down what that is exactly. Also, all that post-Whitney "vocal gymnastics" warbling, if it's done right.

High Sierra Skullfuck
Laura Nyro
Shelagh McDonald
Theres a Brazilian singer called Olivia Bylington who I really like
Old disco divas like Barbara Roy
Kelly Rowland's not bad actually but struggling to think of any other modern singers I rate much

2nd Donny Hathaway
Stevie Wonder
Merle Haggard is fkn ace, way better than Johnny Cash (never bought into the cult of Cash)

Swears, you can't be serious about Mariah Carey. She's an aural virus.

Michael Gira. The bonus track on the CD version of Love of Life is the best thing ever. Plus he does childrens' songs now, the idea of which frightens me beyond belief... Sly Stone too.

Yeah, Tom Waits, why not eh?
The smug but often informative Robert Elms loves to give a Tom Waits anecdote where he flew to New York to interview him armed with nothing but a landline phone number. He calls Waits' house, and the answer message is simply, in trademark gravelly drawl, 'it's Tom... I'm at the beach'. He never heard back from him.

'No Cure for the Lonely'. It's not on the vinyl, but well worth downloading if that's the only version you've got.
